INTRODUCTION To go on the road you must always be aware of danger since there are cars. To make sure you are as safe as you can be you can go through this power point for all the details.

SIGNALLING To turn left, right and stop you need to signal so to turn right you simply check behind you and if a car isn’t too close stick your right arm out to the right, it is the same to turn left but using your left arm on the left side. However stopping is slightly different but still simple. First check behind you if a car isn’t too close stick your left arm out to the left but pointing to the pavement.

CYCLE GEAR You must always wear a helmet even if you are just cycling around the corner because you could get brain damage if you fall without a helmet on. Next you need comfy clothing, foot wear and a reflective jacket.

STARTING OFF Look down the road, if it is clear, place your bike about 20cm outward from the curb. Now that you have your bike in the road check again and if the road is clear put one leg over you need get to the edge of the curb (if there is a car in the way just move to the edge of where the car is) and check if it is clear in the There are three checks to start off your bike ride – and this is how you do it… First put one leg over the bike (remembering to keep the other one on the curb) and sit down. Now, ride away!

T - JUNCTIONS T – junctions are a type of roads that lead into each other in the shape of a “T” such as a B – road leading into a minor road or a minor road leading to a major road.

T – JUNCTIONS TURNING LEFT To turn left on a T – junction you simply check behind you and if a car isn’t too close you may stick your arm out to the left. When you are about 5 meters away from the turn put your hand back on, check right and if it is clear, go and turn left, if not, stop.

T – JUNCTIONS TURNING RIGHT To turn right on a T – junction you need to check behind you and if a car is not too close stick your right arm out and come into the middle of your half of the road and five metres away put your hand back on and look both sides of the junction just ahead of you and if it is clear, go right to the other side and carry on (still on the left). If it is not clear slow down and come to a stop (still in the middle of the road).

STOPPING To stop check behind you stick your left arm out pointing to the pavement and count to three. Once you have done that pull over to the curb and stop, now put one foot on the curb and bring the other over your bike and onto the curb as well and finally lift your bike up on the curb.

FUN FACTS. To make a full stop you do your left brake first then right. If you don’t wear a helmet and get brain damage you might not be able to function properly for the rest of your life. You must always cycle on the left.
