Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I. Old Stuff… 2 of 3 Random – 27 slides

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Photography as Meditate: Recently I was feeling tired and burned out. So, I meditated by doing a major file management update on my laptop and 6 external USB hard drives. That in-turn led to reworking some very old digital images. They were mostly 3 mega-pixel digital images captured using the Nikon Prosumer compact digital camera, Coolpix 5000 and 5400 back in 2002 to 2003.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Discovery: In plain sight I found this very interesting mask in an East Asian specialty store in the Wallingford Center. It’s under exposed to retain incident highlight detail. And the final crop is within the 10% safety margin Camera originalCrop-frame added

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Lab Work: Basic lab and traditional ‘burn’ ‘moves’. Basic processedBurned (area darkening)

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Final Lab: Choices Here are two final lab treatment ideas. The first is a routine result. The second has the colorization added to it. Please turn to the next slide before making comparisons..

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I My Stuff / Random Oldies Selection… Moving On: Then controlled and repeatable motion blur was added to the background image resulting in a more moving image.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Parking Lot: Find I found this very cool hood ornament on a Jaguar parked in a lot near Chinatown. The shot was under exposed to retain the ‘hot sky’ incident reflection detail on the very shiny chrome ornament.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Lab Work: Step 1 Crop the image but keep it to less than 10% of the image area. Whether 3 MP or 10 MP, cropping off pixels means lower image resolution. Crop frame mask

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Lab Work: Step 2+ The basic lab work (Levels, Brightness/ Contrast, and Color) adjustments were applied. Spotting and retouching were also applied to ‘clean up’ the image. Also showing only the un-cropped image maximizes the subject size (presence).

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Lab Work: Advanced This image has gone through advanced image manipulation, and light painting ‘moves’… Use the keyboard Up & Down arrows to compare this with the previous image.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Co Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Transformation: Transforming the ordinary into extraordinary has to do with an a way of seeing. It also has to do with expressing an inner reality. It’s a far cry from the ‘bad habit’ thinking “I’ll fix it later in Photoshop”. The next slide will send the image back to the street…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Compact Digital Prosumer Coolpix: 3 MP2002 Over a different parking lot…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Transformation: Part 1 - Close cropped rose…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Transformation: Part 2 – Close up miscellaneous found image near my home.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Transformation: Combined two ordinary found images into a unique image composition. I’m using design ideas such as contrast, color, line, and movement to make the new image ‘dance’ together.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Large Scale: My daughter enrolls at the UW and I discover the impressive Suzela Hall during the parents campus tour.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Vertical Alignment: Most architectural shots requires a formal approach where vertical lines must be parallel. The image has been fully processed and the walls were made perpendicular to the floor.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I My Stuff / Random Oldies Selection… Vertical Alignment: Most architectural shots requires a formal approach.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Be Prepared: Always have your camera handy. Be prepared to capture the local charm. This was a grab shot from a walk in Wallingford.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Alignment: Even in this grab shot, applying the formal vertical alignment to the image can help make it look more intentional.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Shape Shift: Expand and fill the right side with real image detail.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Shape Shift: Again Consistent image shape is important to a Presentation But it can also become dull. Balance the consistent shape needs with cropping based on the needs of the Particular image. For this reason, the image to The right was cropped to a square shape.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Final Retouch: Repair the missing thumb, I started the process by copying the thumb from the other hand.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Working with Ideas: Camera original.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Photoshop: Basic processed and cleaned up.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Over The Top: Tongue–in-cheek image mated with a straight headline.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Old Stuff 2 of 3: Random Summary: Except for the last tongue –in-cheek example, the rest of the examples were all found shots. Some image sets remained somewhat true to their origin while other merged or evolved into a whole new thing. The subject matter changed from small, medium, to large. Although, I hope that you sense a look & feel that ties them together. And that is my passion for light, design, and playing with ideas.
