Presentation transcript:

* Many useful products are made from mixtures * Glass is unique- it looks and acts as a solid but has the properties of a fluid; is made by heating sand carbonate and limestone * Steel is very strong, it is made from a mixture of iron and carbon * Regina has a large steel manufacturing plant called IPSCO (Interprovincal Steel Corporation)

* A detergent is a substance that cleans away dirt; usually dissolvable in water; ie soap * Detergent: soap that contains a cleaning agent called a surfactant. Surfactants are particles that attach themselves to dirt and oil particles and pull them into the water to be washed away * Phosphates increase the amount of suds, however they are bad for the environment

* We produce a lot of waste; much of which is NOT BIODEGRADABLE (break down) and cause pollution * Sources that affect the environment: 1. Garbage 2. Industrial waste 3. Air pollution (smog) 4. Agricultural waste (pesticides, fertilizers) 5. Sewage * We need to decrease the amount of garbage to help the environment

* Cleaning solvents
