1 The World Of Solutions 3

2 PROPERTIES Particles spread evenly throughout the solution
Uniform composition (components are all in the same state) Particles do not settle Particles cannot be distinguished by the eye

3 Components of a Solution
is made up of a and A solute dissolves in the solvent. A SOLVEnt does the dissolving of the solute (making it “disappear”), resulting in a uniform composition. If a solute can dissolve, it is said to be soluble and forms a solution. The solvent is usually in the same state as the solution. A solute can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas. A solvent can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas.

4 Diluted: Concentrated: Saturated:
It measures how much solute is in the solvent. Diluted: Concentrated: Saturated: low concentration of solute present in the solution high concentration of solute present in the solution cannot dissolve any more solute

5 What makes up this mixture?
Look at the experiment results and determine if a solution has been made. If it has, then decide which substance is the solvent and which substance is the solute. Test Name of Substance 1 Name of Substance 2 What makes up this mixture? Heterogeneous/ Homogeneous Mixture? A 1/2 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. iron filings solid-solid mixture heterogeneous B 10 mL tap water solid-liquid mixture homogeneous C Carbon dioxide gas-liquid mixture D E 1/2 tsp. sand F 1/2 tsp. flour G 2 mL oil liquid-liquid mixture

6 Who is the solvent
