Describe technologies based on the solubility of materials

2 How does soap get dirt off clothes?
Detergent  a substance that can remove dirt from fabric. All detergents contain a cleaning agent called a surfactant.

3 Phosphates were added to detergents to make them work better.
A surfactant is a particle that attaches itself to oil and dirt so that it can’t reattach to clothes. Phosphates were added to detergents to make them work better.

4 Diving & Decompression The ‘Bends’
At greater water pressures, nitrogen gas dissolves in our blood and tissues at a much higher concentration than normal. If a diver ascends too quickly to the surface, the pressure decreases rapidly and bubbles of nitrogen gas form in parts of the body.

5 Solubility of Gases The greater the pressure, the more gas is dissolved in a liquid.

6 As he rises, the nitrogen gas comes out of solution and forms bubbles in the blood. This painful condition can be fatal if not treated. The deeper the diver goes, the greater the pressure, and the more nitrogen gas is dissolved in his blood.

8 A hyperbaric chamber pressurizes the body, and nitrogen is forced to dissolve back into the blood, then the pressure slowly decreases back to normal allowing the gas to slowly leave the body.

Divers need to know how a change in water depth affects the amount of nitrogen taken into the blood stream. By knowing this, they can determine how slowly they must rise to the surface to avoid getting the ‘bends’.
