The Scramble for Africa

Berlin Conference ( ) European powers divided up Africa at this conference

European Colonization of Africa invasion, occupation, colonization and annexation of African territory by European countries between 1881 and Reasons: Europeans needed resources for industry Europeans wanted land to settle

Problems: Europeans never developed Africa’s infrastructure Europeans provided native people with little education and training Results: Much of Africa is poor & underdeveloped. Today many African countries are controlled by greedy and corrupt leaders. Greed and corruption has led to many conflicts in Africa

AFRICA TODAY African colonies became independent after World War II. Most European countries couldn’t afford to maintain their colonies after the war.

Effects of European Colonization Much of Africa’s wealth is controlled by a few individuals Africa has poor health care which has led to many health problems Lack of development makes it difficult for governments to control their territory Conflicts have caused numerous famines and human migration (refugees)
