Book Profiling 101: Getting the Books You Want The Small Library Perspective Rob Kairis Library Director Kent State University, Stark The Large Library Perspective Melissa Spohn Collection Development Librarian Kent State University

Defining the OhioLINK Collection ____________________________________________ Can be considered a Core collection : –Small libraries with limited resources may actually rely more on OhioLINK materials for their users than their own materials For example, last year for KSU-Stark more books were borrowed from other libraries than checked out from its own collection (Annual Report)Annual Report –Libraries need to define their collection and their role as a contributor to the Shared Collection

KSU-Stark KSU-Kent NEOUCOM Ohio State Defining the Library’s Role ____________________________________________

Approval Plans (Slips) ____________________________________________ MORE Appropriate for Small Libraries: –Profile helps funnel a subset of books appropriate for the library from all books available (Gen-AC only) –Fewer books to review (helpful when staff size is small) –Facilitates faculty participation in selecting  slips separated by department  criteria used:  highly relevant to the courses taught  somewhat relevant and NOT widely duplicated in OhioLINK  not relevant –Other Strategies  Check GobiTween before ordering  Wait 3-4 months after receiving slips and check OhioLINK – Results  Last year KSU Stark book lending was up 45%  Lending is up 90% from 2 years ago (Annual Report)Annual Report

Approval Plans (Books) ____________________________________________ Just As Appropriate for Large Libraries: -Our job is to populate the OhioLINK catalog Caution: Watch out for duplication Customize profile to bring in the books you want -books that directly support faculty research and teaching -fewer yellow slips to review -save time and money Suggested ways to customize: Series instruction –Publishers’ series Keywords/LC Subject Headings -LC Class WebLC Class Web –Gobi2 (Search, Standard then define year published and LC subject heading)
