Information Literacy at UWE June, 2006

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop2 The Workshop Team Jason Briddon (Faculty Librarian, HSC) Jacqui Chelin (Deputy Head of Library Services) Stewart Green (School of Computer Science, CEMS) Malcolm Mceachran (Faculty Librarian, HSC) Anne Moggridge (School of Information Systems, CEMS) Dianne Nelson (Faculty Librarian CEMS)

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop3 Background The reading Strategy Proposal is currently being rolled out at UWE. This means that: Each Reading Strategy section of a module specification “should include an overview of the approach that will be taken by the module leader to ensure that each student has: Access to essential reading Training in how to retrieve/evaluate further readings to support their studies” (Guidance notes for users completing the specification)

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop4 Challenge Specifying access to essential reading is proving relatively straight forward. But how can we ensure, when specifying information literacy (IL) provision, that each student on each University programme will receive the right amount of exposure to it? One danger is that, as a set, the core modules on a programme underprovide w.r.t. IL Another is that they overprovide w.r.t. IL

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop5 Other Motivating Factors The need to consider the extent to which the UWE graduate should be an information literate graduate A recent library study highlighted a need for a higher level of information literacy among students A recognition by academic and faculty staff of the need for further deliberation on the provision of IL The higher profile of IL brought about by an increase in the use of e-learning and web-based resources

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop6 Workshop Aims Short term: To introduce and refine an information literacy (IL) audit tool in order to help module leaders and programme teams to specify IL provision so that all UWE students achieve an appropriate level of IL Long term To initiate a review of, and debate about, approaches to IL with a view to encouraging the university to develop an IL strategy

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop7 Morning Session: Skills-Based Approach to IL Content: Introduction to the SCONUL skills-based approach Hands-on experience with our IL audit framework Discussion of the framework in small groups Objective: The intended objective is an improved, acceptable IL audit framework Rationale: An IL skills audit framework may be used by a Module Leader to assess the provision of IL in their module. The results may be used by a programme team (academic and library staff) to plan a more rational provision of IL across programmes.

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop8 Afternoon Session: the Relational Approach to IL Content: Introduction to the relational approach to IL Implications for teaching Challenges for the approach Objective: The intended objective is a raised staff awareness of another major approach to IL Rationale: Awareness of major approaches to IL will inform the long-term review of, and debate about, IL within UWE

June 30th 2006 Information Literacy at UWE Workshop9 Keynote Speaker I would like to extend a warm welcome to Judith Keene our keynote speaker today. Judith is the Joint Head of Information and Learning Services, Research and Teaching at the University of Worcester. Judith has: published a number of papers on IL given invited talks on IL is Project Director for the JISC Managed Learning Environment project
