, ! : ; ?

There is a new toy on the market that has everyone saying __________(Exclamation)! It is called the ____________(Adjective) ___________(Noun) box and will be in stores in ____________(A Month). The _________(Adjective) _______(Noun) box is a new gadget that lets you do just about anything!

 Write three important things you did over the break!  Happy 2012!!

 The first part of today we will spend learning about commas!  When we read, commas help us know where to pause and read correctly  When we write, commas help us make our sentences stronger!  You will receive a graphic organizer to help you write the definitions of some comma rules!

Commas

Comma Rule # 1 Use commas to separate items in a series Example: I had apples, cereal, and orange juice for breakfast this morning.

 I’ll have pickles ketchup mustard and onions on this hot dog.

 Use commas between coordinate adjectives (words that describe nouns).  What are coordinate adjectives? ◦ 2 adjectives that are next to each other in a sentence  Example: “Joey is a shy, observant boy.”

 Examples: shy- observant  You try!  Share with your partners.

 Use commas before the words and, but, or, nor, for, so, or yet in a compound sentence…. Look at your notes from Monday…what are these words called?!?!? FANBOYS! For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So

 2 independent clauses (complete sentence) that are linked together by a conjunction…  only use commas when we have independent clauses

 Joe read the book and saw the movie.  Joe read the book, and then he saw the movie. ** We only need to use a comma in the second example

This class is exciting but it is hard. He will be elected tomorrow and he will be a good leader.

 Use commas before and after a quotation  Example:  "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many things.”  **Remember…at the end of your quote, punctuation goes INSIDE the quotation marks

Dates and Locations:  Los Angeles, CA  August 4, 2009

 Next, we will learn about two types of sentences: ◦ Fragment Sentences ◦ Run-On Sentences  Use the back of your comma rules graphic organizer to take notes  It is important to know these two types of sentences so you can identify them and correct them!

1. Subject (noun) 2. Verb 3. Complete idea

A sentence fragment is only a piece of a sentence. A fragment sentence does not express a complete thought.

What is a sentence fragment? What is a Run-on sentence?

Sat behind me in science class What’s missing?

Yes, we need a subject. The new girl sat behind me in science class.

 A run-on (or run-on sentence) is a sentence that really has TWO sentences (or complete ideas) INCORRECTLY combined into one.

 The girls played basketball the boys played tennis.

 Einstein is famous for E=mc Edison is famous for the invention of the light bulb. 2
