3 You must have a subject and a verb on BOTH sides of the coordinating conjunction to achieve this pattern.

4 Step 1: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Step 2: Look for possible coordinating conjunctions. -Are any of the conjunctions part of the FANBOYS? -Circle the FANBOYS and label it with a “c” above Step 3: Find the verbs. -Underline the complete verb twice in each part Step 4: Ask “who or what is (insert verb)?” -The answer to this question is the subject. -Underline the subject once in each part. Step 5: If you have an S and V on both sides of the “c,” you have Pattern A.

7 After the last snowfall, the streets were slick. Step 1: Does a prepositional phrase start the sentence? YES Step 2: Does the prepositional phrase have at least 4 words? YES Step 3: Place a comma after the prepositional phrase.
