Lines 16-22 This passage establishes the setting and challenges the Pilgrims. What kind of weather do the Pilgrims face in the new land? 2. How do the Pilgrims expect the Native Americans to respond to them? 3. How does the land appear? Sharp and violent winters, dangerous travel conditions, and fierce storms. Note: praising God. The Pilgrims expect the Native Americans to start a war with arrows. Additionally, the Pilgrims expect them to be wild. (“The First Encounter”) The land appears desolate and unsafe.

Lines 78-95 This passage describes the Pilgrims’ violent first meeting with Native Americans. What happens after the Pilgrims hear the strange cry? What do the Pilgrims do to protect themselves? 3. What weapons do the Indians have? 4. How many Pilgrims are hurt? A Pilgrim came running in responding to the cry and a war began (Indians began shooting arrows). Some Pilgrims ran to recover their arms, and those that had their muskets fired back. The Indians had arrows and cutlasses. The Pilgrims were not hurt, although the arrows came close to hitting them.

Lines 119-134 This passage describes the Pilgrims’ evolving relationship with the local Native Americans. What are the Pilgrims’ relations with the Indians after their illness? Who comes to speak with the Pilgrims? 3. What does he do for the Pilgrims? 4. Who does he tell them about? At first they played a type of cat and mouse game (Indians would come near while the Pilgrims continued to chase them away). Occasionally, the Indians would steal Pilgrim’s supplies. Samoset, a Native American, speaks to the Pilgrims. Samoset provided the Native Americans about information regarding the land and other travelers (this came to be beneficial for the Pilgrims). Samoset provides the name of a Native American who speaks better English than himself (Squanto).

Lines 155-172 This passage illustrates the productive relationship between the Pilgrims and Squanto and the successful outcome of the Pilgrims’ first year at Cape Cod. How does Squanto help the Pilgrims? How does the summer go for the Pilgrims? 3. What resources do they find? 4. How do the Pilgrims describe their condition? Squanto helped the Pilgrims by teaching them how to grow corn, catch fish, and take them to unknown places for their own benefit. He was loyal and never left them ‘til he died. Summer harvest went well in terms of gathering crops and hunting (to store food for the winter). Wild turkeys, corn, and venison counted as several resources for food. The pilgrims describe their condition as plentiful.
