The Summer Advisory Board has been charged to explore scheduling opportunities related to developmental coursework, general education, upper division coursework, high failure, and high demand courses in the summer term.

Current 7 Week Standard Start Times

Major Start Times 9:00, 11:00, 1:00, and 2:00 are major start times for classes, with each having 11% or more of daytime classes. Classes at 9:00, 11:00, 1:00, and 2:00 represent 87% of daytime classes. Summer 2013 Analysis of Overlapping Classes

The vast majority of classes run past the next start time (98%), but the larger concern is running past the next major start time. 1. Current summer semester standard times limit students ability to take multiple classes because classes overlap and students can be blocked from registering for multiple classes. 2. Data from Institutional Research and Information showed that of the 2316 students who took two or more classes last summer, only 271 (12%) took two classes with the same start time. 3. It would be easier for students to build a schedule with multiple classes if classes didn’t overlap. 4. The student omnibus survey suggests that students are looking for a middle ground in terms of number of class meetings and class length. The student preference appears to be 3 or 4 meetings per week for classes that are a moderate length.
