THE PURPOSE OF INDUCTION To make students feel welcomed at the college To make students aware of key support services To make students aware of key ‘useful contacts’ To make students aware of the importance of IT Systems/ Online Platforms To make students aware of what their responsibilities are To make students aware of what facilities are available and how they can access them To provide an opportunity to meet with the Dean of the School To provide an opportunity to ask questions To make students aware of their ‘wider programme area’

The Format 1 ST Year Students Welcome from the Dean of School Overview of Security procedures and where to go for general Info (Information Centre) Welcome talks from Student Services, Academic Support, International, Technical, The Library, Language Centre and the SU Drinks Reception & further Information Stands 2 nd & 3 rd Year Students Welcome back from the Dean of School Welcome back talk from key services with particular reference to updates/ changes that may have happened over the Summer In depth presentation from Student Enterprise & Employability ‘SEE’ (30 minutes approx) Presentation from students (3 rd year students speak to 2 nd years about their experience and recent graduates speak to 3 rd years)

Induction Successes Having a large number of staff available, so that students can recognise faces Short snappy sessions (2-3 minutes per speaker) Referring students to the LCC printed Induction guide during presentations Referring to Induction as a ‘Welcome Event’ or in the case of 2 nd & 3 rd years a ‘Welcome Back Event’ Having the event timetabled massively increases attendance. Getting course tutors/ academic staff involved helps with attendance at the 2 nd & 3 rd year events Delivering a ‘mop up session’ for students who may have missed their designated induction.

Induction Failures Covering too much ground. (First year students don’t need to know the intricacies of the online library catalogue- information like this will come later on) With around 30 inductions it is essential to plan it early. In the past when certain staff haven’t attended key services have been missed. Covering areas that the 2 nd and especially third year students already know. (the peer to peer delivery from former students is much more effective) Not engaging with course leaders. If tutors see the value of induction then they will encourage students to attend or bring them along.

“I doubt students will remember much from the first day. There are so many levels of support (which is a great thing) but overwhelming on our first day. The presentations themselves were great and the staff did their best at keeping it concise, and light hearted which made it all a bit easier” First Year LCC Student

Q.1 How useful did you find the LCC Welcome Event? I found it extremely useful I found it fairly useful I found some parts useful and some parts not useful I didn’t find it useful at all

Q 2 How did you find the length of the event ? The Length of the event was about right The Length of the event was too long The event was too short

Q.3 What sections of the talk did you find the most helpful/ interesting ? The welcome from the School The talk from the Information Centre The talk from Student Services The talk from academic support The talk from International The talk from the technical team The talk from the Library The talk from the Language Centre The talk from the Students’ Union

Q.4 Did the event make you feel welcomed at the college ?

Analysis of the Quantitative questions Over 90% of the students surveyed described the welcome event as ‘extremely useful’ or ‘fairly useful’. Question 2 also provided some encouraging data with 93% of the surveyed students saying that they found the event to be about the right length. This confirms what we suspected, that focused events lasting 45 minutes- an hour are about the right amount of time to hold students’ interest and not overload them with information. Question 3 breaks down the various sections of the welcome talk, and apart from the two services that are perceived as being geared to a specific group (Language Centre & International) they all come out fairly equally.

Q.5 How did you find out about the welcome event?

Q.6 Was there anything that wasn’t covered that you were expecting ?
