2 nd ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER’S ORIENTATION

2 ND ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER RESPONSIBILITIES PHYSICAL ARRANGEMENTS Assists in conducting jamboree promotion rallies and in recruiting individual Scouts to attend the jamboree. Participates in pre-jamboree training. Is responsible to the Scoutmaster for troop physical arrangements. Works with the troop quartermaster in the issuance of supplies. Arranges directly with the subcamp equipment and maintenance officer for supplies. Working through and with the quartermaster and patrol leaders, trains and oversees the patrols in their tasks of drawing food and food supplies, preparation and serving of food, and cleaning up. Consults regularly with patrol cooks on the most effective ways to prepare daily food selections. Meets daily with the patrol cooks and fireman, giving briefings on food preparation and fire safety. Oversees cleanup operations after each meal. Is responsible for the care and neat appearance of all equipment. Is responsible for the transportation of personal baggage to and from the jamboree.

TROOP QUARTERMASTER RESPONSIBILITIES PHYSICAL ARRANGEMENTS Is responsible for troop equipment and supplies. Works with the second assistant Scoutmaster for physical arrangements in controlling the storage and issuance of all equipment and supplies belonging to the troop or issued to it at the jamboree. Maintains and inventory of all equipment and supplies and is responsible through the second assistant Scoutmaster for the return in good repair of all equipment to the sub camp equipment and maintenance officer and to the local council.

Jamboree Supplied Equipment

GUESTIMATED JAMBOREE TENT LAYOUT Recommended Camp Assembly Procedure Move all troop equipment to the camp site. Assemble and place dinning flies first. Erect out board corner tents first. Erect tents adjacent to the corner tents in sequence proceeding toward the center of the camp. Take an inventory of tent equipment and assemble a list of any missing or damaged items and report to the QM as soon as possible for replacement of any critical equipment. Assemble stoves and remaining camp equipment. Take an inventory and report to the QM.

Lessons Learned from Prior Jamboree’s Do not wait until the last minute to get started …………. On any thing!!! Plan before proceeding, it will save time and aggravation. Seek advice from former Jamboree personnel. We already made the mistakes. Do not assume the kids know everything. They usually do but they play dumb! When giving instructions practice HUA “heard, understood, and acknowledged”. Be sure the duty roster is posted and the service crews know who they are, and what time they are to report. Have the SPL do this before the Scouts leave camp, and each night. Post a tenting diagram on the bulletin board so you can find the scouts in the morning who do not report for early food pick up. Stoves can not be placed under the tarp or within three foot of a tent. Allow only the cooking crew in the cooking area while preparing and serving meals. Keep your food area and food boxes clean. Be sure that food boxes are returned promptly. Verify after every cooked meal that each LP tank valve is turned off. Maintain tight camp discipline, this will result in less maintenance that you will have to do. Running through the camp, Frisbee, football, and horseplay in the camp and camp vicinity often results in torn guy lines, ripped tents, or beat up scouts. Smile and have fun. Murphy will always show up, but we “will” adapt and overcome.
