1 Child Development A Class Syllabus
Grades 9-12 Prerequisite: None Course Overview: Learn how children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually by assuming the role of a caregiver by conducting a playschool experience for a community of preschoolers. Have fun and experience the relationship of working with young children. Attendance is crucial in this class.

2 Essential Learnings: 1. Identify and discuss the various ways in which you can benefit from studying children. 2. Identify child develop theories and understand why each theory is useful in understanding children, how they think and feel, and how they develop. 3. Understand developmental characteristics of children ages 3, 4, and 5 in the areas of physical, social, emotional and intellectual development. 4. Learn how to observe children, using various techniques. 5. Demonstrate effective communication skills with peers, children, and parents. 6. Plan, prepare and teach age appropriate activities to preschoolers. 7. Learn effective methods for classroom management and discipline, while promoting positive behavior.

3 Attendance/Punctuality:
Good student attendance promotes successful school performance. The EHS attendance policy will be strictly enforced. Playschool attendance on teaching is mandatory, unless there is an extreme emergency. If you are absent on your teaching days, you will receive a zero for your experience. You will receive a calendar in advance so make sure to schedule appointments around the teaching schedule. Tardies will require you to complete special clean-up duties.

4 MAKE-UP POLICY You will have the opportunity to make up missed class work resulting from absences according to the following guidelines. DAILY ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are due within two school days after you return. No credit will be given for assignments handed in after that time. NO LATE WORK will be accepted. **Remember it is your responsibility to find out what you missed on the days you were absent. TESTS If you are absent on the day of a test, you will make up the test within one week of your return. If you do not make arrangements to make up the test within one week, you will receive a grade of zero.

5 GRADING Grades are determined by total points earned on: *Daily assignments and projects *Playschool lessons, teaching experiences and participation *Quizzes and Tests

6 CLASS EXPECTATIONS Child Development
* Be respectful and cooperate with all classmates * Be on time and ready to begin when the bell rings * Please remain seated until the bell rings * On your teaching days, you must clean up all your supplies and material before you are permitted to leave the class.

7 * No food or beverages will be allowed in class
 * Tardies: You will be required to serve extra time after school while performing additional cleaning tasks. * Turn in high quality work on dates due.
