After the Civil War The Civil War was the most costly war in American History in terms of total devastation. At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000. These casualties exceed the nation's loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam.

Amazing War Losses

Lee’s hungry men were allowed to return to their homes and farms to face an uncertain future.

There was jubilation in the North.

President Lincoln visited captured Richmond and was greeted as an emancipator by former slaves (Freedmen) and free blacks alike.

The South lay in ruins from its transportation system...

to its economy and banking system, to its agricultural system,

to its few factories, and its churches and public buildings.
