Analysis of storage PRODUCTS

Product analysis Investigating and understanding how shape, style and proportion affect the appearance of a product are key skills in designing. But what other aspects should be considered when analysing a product? function, what is it’s intended use? how effective does it function ? is it easy to look after or maintain ? what materials have been used? sustainability of the product and the materials? how easy or safe is it to use – ergonomics Evaluating products in this investigative way is called product analysis

Product analysis : For the next task we are going to analyse storage products, that others have designed and made. Its helpful to have a checklist of aspects that you think are important when looking at storage products e.g. easy to use, materials, cost etc. When you are evaluating you can also think about: is it possible to make a better product and how? and possible ideas for your storage product. Checkl ist 1. Easy to use 2…

Can you think of possible key words that will help you with your product evaluation? One list focuses on the function, and the other on the appearance of a product. function related key words ease of use materials performance reliability size ergonomics maintenance – low /high sustainability – materials, how long will the product last, can it be reused/recycled flexibility multi-functional safety well made – build quality Here are few. I’m sure you’ll add to the list appearance related key words style proportion colour texture finish

Task – in group of 2-4. Look carefully at the ‘storage handling collection’ – this may be, an actual collection of products in your school or a digital collection. Discuss with other pupils in the group, the positive and negative aspects of each product. You may like to write down these design features or make a quick sketch. Product analysis Negative design aspects. Positive design aspects.
