2. Students will design and build a folding pocket saw Project is intended to develop a number of skill sets Design process will allow students to create a customized saw blade intended for anything from camping to fine woodworking

3. Learning Outcomes Steel folding and shaping techniques Practical and aesthetic design Material Science (high carbon spring steel vs. mild steel etc). Heat treatment techniques Riveting Techniques. Saw blade design and tooth set.

6. 45 Class periods 8 – 9 classes dedicated to design 4 days for safety 2 days for material science 3 days to design 37 construction days Quick demos throughout class time

Background knowledge and creative/critical thinking skills. characteristics of metals, strength, ease of use, application Relating understanding of metalwork to personal, economic, and societal considerations Potential uses such as a drywall hole saw, buck knife, mini-hack saw. Economical use of materials, recycling scrap metal from places like old leaf springs.
