Employee Engagement Readiness Name Department

Purpose / Objectives To help us prepare for the Employee Engagement (EE) Survey by ensuring a common understanding:  What is EE?  How does EE impact our department?  What are our roles are in the EE process?

Employee Engagement Definition …the extent to which employees commit to something or someone in their organization, how hard they work, and how long they stay as a result of that commitment – Corporate Leadership Council …a heightened emotional and cognitive connection that a person has with his/her job, co-workers, manager, or organization that, in turn, influences him/her to apply additional effort on the job. – The Conference Board …an employee’s willingness and ability to contribute to the organization’s success – Towers Perrin

Why Measure and Improve Employee Engagement? Retention and Recruitment Efforts Patient/Customer Satisfaction Productivity and Efficiency Innovation Workplace safety—for employees and patients

What Drives Employee Engagement? Survey Items Most Highly Related to Engagement and Willingness to Recommend: Recognition Timely Communication Being involved in decisions affecting how work gets done Ability to Raise Issues in the organization, especially “upward” Ongoing training and career Development

Our Roles in EE Staff Role Open, honest feedback Constructive, no “axes to grind” Manager Role Enable Survey Readiness /Participation Share Survey Results Collaboratively Develop EE Action Plan Monitor Progress EE is a Two Way Street

What to Expect Survey Dates: March (5-23 rd ) How: via online survey for almost all employees Survey will be accessible from a UMHS web page that contains… necessary info about the survey, including FAQs covered on next few slides a link to actually take the survey

Selecting the unit/ department/ work area on the survey How do I know which work unit/ area/department to select on the survey? Select the department, unit, or work area your position officially reports to Work area codes are alpha-numeric, with English description Our Code is ?

What does “we” and “my team” refer to in the survey? “We” and “my team” refer to the people with whom you work or interact on a day to day basis. “We” and “my team” don’t necessarily mean everyone Your “team” can include other individuals with whom you work Your team can even include others

Who is My “Customer?” “Patients and/or Customers”? When answering these questions, think about the people that you and your team serve. Every employee has “customers” “Customers” can include other employees or faculty

Comments It’s your choice whether or not to provide comments If you do, make them constructive, not personal, and also don’t include information that might identify who you are Comments are edited and combined into reports, given to the directors and/or managers for an area. I Feel …

Is this survey really anonymous? Facts: You are only required to identify your work area No individually identifying information is required The survey is set up recognizing that many share computers. IP addresses or other traces of data are NOT captured. “Cookies” and other data bits are NOT written to any computer accessing the survey.

Is this survey really anonymous? But I’m the only employee with this job function in my work unit! Work area reports - are generated for areas with a minimum of 5 responses— NEVER LESS The minimum sample size for a “job family report” = 10 responses Open ended comments containing detailed personal information are edited to protect the anonymity

Survey Cycle: Continuous Improvement Results Received: Quantitative (numbers) reports estimated late April Qualitative (comments) reports in May Sharing the Data ( May through August) Ongoing: Goal Development / Improvements
