Module 3: Restroom Cleaning Problems and Solutions SPARKLING RESTROOM TRAINING PROGRAM

Problem: Odors  2 types of odors: temporary and ongoing  Temporary odors are most often caused by people and trash receptacles  Ongoing odors are most often caused by urine, especially saturated in tile grout

Solution: Temporary Odors  Regularly spraying the restroom and trash receptacles with a deodorizer  Disinfecting inside of trash can while changing liner  Checking for leaks or missed trash in the bottom of the trash receptacle

Problem: Urine Odors  Urine odor is usually caused by bacteria that use urine as a food source  Both the urine and the bacteria need to be eliminated in order to fully destroy the odor

Solution  Disinfectant cleaner  Disinfectants kill the bacteria that are causing the odors  Enzyme cleaner  Contains bacteria that release enzymes that consume the urine, or the source of the odor

Disinfectant Cleaner  Dilute disinfectant cleaner to proper dilution and clean floor around toilets/urinals and the outsides of toilets/urinals  Leave surface visibly wet and allow to air dry

Enzyme Cleaner  Dilute enzyme cleaner to proper dilution and apply to area around toilets/urinals/sinks

Problem: Dirty stained grout  Grout is porous and easily entraps dirt, stains, and bacteria  Grout can appear dirty and cause malodors

Solution  First: deep clean to remove embedded dirt and bacteria  Second: remove stains and brighten grout

Step 1: Deep Clean  Apply an alkaline cleaner to the floor with a mop and let sit for 5-10 minutes  Scrub floor with a an automatic scrubber or scrub brush  Vacuum spent solution or pick up with mop and water

Step 2: Remove Stains & Brighten  Apply peroxide cleaner to the floor with a mop & let sit for 5-10 minutes  Scrub floor with an automatic scrubber or scrub brush  Vacuum spent solution or pick up with mop and water

Step 3 (optional): Seal Grout  Apply a grout seal to the floor, spreading with a squeegee. Make sure to cover the entire floor evenly.

Problem: Hard Water Scale Buildup  Hard water residue can leave traces around sinks, floors, and toilets.

Solution  Acid cleaner

Step 1  Apply acid cleaner with a foaming trigger sprayer to floor, walls, toilets, urinals, counters, and anywhere else hard water buildup is visible  Start at the bottom and work upwards

Step 2  Scrub fixtures, including showerheads, drains, soap trays, sinks, faucets, with a brush  Rinse all surfaces thoroughly with water
