The primary areas of repair in this restoration were the fusee, mainspring barrel, fusee chain, cannon pinion and balance staff. All of this work had to be done by hand with antique tools. The fusee- invented by DaVinci around 1500 for clocks. In the oldest fusee watches, the fusee was controlled by cat gut. In the finest fusee watches, a very small chain was made by hand. Each link is made up of three figure “8” plates, riveted together. The Yates fusee needed several links and the barrel end hook remade.
