Water Hot Water, Cold Water Investigation 2 Part 1: Build A Thermometer

Essential Questions What happens when water is heated? What happens when water is cooled?

What You Will Learn You will learn how water changes when it is cooled or heated.

Part 1 Build A Thermometer We will use a thermometer to help us answer the questions –What happens when water is heated? –What happens when water is cooled?

Tell Me What You Know What happens to water when it is heated? What happens to water when it is cooled? Talk to your partners. Share.

Room-Temperature Water The dispensing bottle is filled with green room-temperature water. What does room temperature mean?

Task Getters will get the trays with the materials they need for this investigation when I say “materials.” Notice that you have a glass bottle with a stopper in it that has a straw in the middle of the stopper. The bottle has green room-temperature water in it. The straw has a mark to show the level of the room- temperature water.

Task Cont’d Carefully turn the bottles on their side and upside down to see what happens to the water level in the straws. Share your observations with your partners.

Question What do you think will happen if we put the bottles in hot water. Discuss this with your partners. Reporters, share.

Task I am giving each group a cup of hot water. Managers, put the bottle in the cup. Everyone, watch the water in the bottle for 3 minutes to see what happens. Collectors, when I say to, mark the level of the green water on the straw.

Discuss Observations Talk to your partners about what you observed when the bottle was put in the hot water. Discuss why the water moved up in the straw. Reporters, share.

When Water is Heated When water gets warmer, it gets bigger, or takes up more space, or expands. There wasn’t room for the expanded water in the bottle, so it pushed up into the straw.

Question What else have you seen that has liquid that pushes up in a tube when it gets hot? What we just used is called a _________________? Yes, a thermometer.

Question What might happen if we put our thermometers in cold water? Discuss this with your partners. Reporters, share.

Task I am giving each group a cup of ice water. Managers, put the bottle in the cup. Everyone, watch the water in the bottle for 3 minutes to see what happens. Collectors, when I say to, mark the level of the green water on the straw.

Discuss Observations Talk to your partners about what you observed when the bottle was put in the ice water. Discuss why the water moved down in the straw. Reporters, share.

When Water Cools When water cools, it takes up less space, or contracts. The cooled water took up less space in the bottle, so it went down the straw.

Clean Up Collectors please return all materials to the materials station. Carefully take the glass bottle out of the ice water. Empty the ice water and the warm water into the sink. Replace the cups on the tray.

Essential Questions What happens to water when it is heated? It expands or gets bigger. It takes up more space. What happens to water when it is cooled? It contracts or gets smaller. It takes up less space.

What You Learned You learned that water changes when it is heated or cooled. When water is heated, it expands or gets bigger. It takes up more room. When water is cooled, it contracts or gets smaller. It takes up less room.

Vocabulary Expand – gets larger or takes up more space Contracts – gets smaller or takes up less room.
