Unit 5-(Energy Transfer) Date: 9/9 Learning Target: I can explain temperature change, heat and energy transfer when different temperatures of water are mixed. Sponge: Your teacher takes a sip of her hot cup of coffee. She gets busy for the next 15 minutes. When she takes her next sip, does it taste the same? Why?

To do… Check HW

Performance Assessment – Thermal Energy 1.When something is pushed into a smaller space, it is being (compressed or expanded). 2.When air particles are compressed, the particle number (increases, decreases, or stays the same) 3.During expansion, the space in between the particles (increases or decreases). 4.During contraction, the space in between the particles (increases or decreases). 5.When the solid sphere was heated, it’s volume (increased or decreased).

Let’s review what we know about energy and particles… The movement of particles is called _________ energy. As particles heat up, they move ___________. As particles cool down, they move __________. What happens to the volume of particles when heated? When cooled? How did this happen? Energy actually moves from particle to particle! When particles collide, Kinetic energy transfers from the particle with more energy to the particle with less energy!!

Write in your notebook index: Energy Transfer- the movement of energy from one location, to another Conduction – energy transfer between particles through direct contact.

Write in your notebook index: Heat- the transfer of energy from matter at a higher temp to a lower temp Temperature- measure of the KE of the particles of a substance.

Let’s review how to read a thermometer.

Investigation 5-Part 1 You are going to do a investigation/lab using water at different temperatures. Turn to pg. 45 in your notebook. Read the question. Make a prediction. Explain your prediction. Be prepared to discuss!

Page 45 lab directions Materials: 50 ml of hot water, 50 ml of cold water, 3 rd foam cup, thermometer Directions: Record the temperature of hot water and cold water. Make a prediction. Mix the water in the 3 rd cup. Measure the temperature.

Notebook, Page 85

Discussion Questions!!! 1) What happened to the hot water when it was mixed with the cold water? 2) What happened to the cold water when it was mixed with the hot water? 3) What happened to the kinetic energy of the particles in hot water when the hot and cold water mixed? 4) What happened to the kinetic energy of the particles in cold water when the hot and cold water mixed?

Candy questions…. Make a prediction. If I mix equal amounts of 10 degree and 30 degree water, what will the temperature of the mixture be?

Candy questions…. Make a prediction. If I mix equal amounts of 10 degree and 30 degree water, what will the temperature of the mixture be? 20! Did heat go from the 30 degree to the 10 degree water or the 10 degree to the 30 degree water?

Candy questions…. Make a prediction. If I mix equal amounts of 10 degree and 30 degree water, what will the temperature of the mixture be? 20! Did heat go from the 30 degree to the 10 degree water or the 10 degree to the 30 degree water? 30 to 10! Heat goes from hot to cold!

Candy questions…. Make a prediction. If I mix equal amounts of 50 degree and 100 degree water, what will the temperature of the mixture be?

Candy questions…. Make a prediction. If I mix equal amounts of 50 degree and 100 degree water, what will the temperature of the mixture be? 75! Did heat go from the 100 degree to the 50 degree water or the 50 degree to the 100 degree water?

Candy questions…. Make a prediction. If I mix equal amounts of 50 degree and 100 degree water, what will the temperature of the mixture be? 75! Did heat go from the 100 degree to the 50 degree water or the 50 degree to the 100 degree water? 100 to 50!

Candy questions…. The room right now is 70 degrees. Which cup of water will exchange the most heat with the room?

Candy questions…. The room right now is 70 degrees. Which cup of water will exchange the most heat with the room?

If time…. Brainpop: Temperature

Investigation 5-Part 2 Date: 9/10 Learning Target: I can explain energy transfer when particles collide. Sponge: Is cold ever transferred?

To do…

Write in your notebook index: Equilibrium- a condition in which a system is experiencing no change

Refer to yesterday’s lab… Equilibrium- a condition in which a system is experiencing no change Heat went from the _____ to the ______ water. ______ is the measure of the KE or heat in a substance. When did equilibrium happen?

Multimedia Foss Web – Mixing Hot and Cold Water – Thermometer – Energy Transfer by Collision – Energy Transfer

Copy in your notebook and discuss. Energy Transfer Kinetic energy = heat. (The greater the kinetic energy, the hotter it is.) Energy transfers between particles when they collide. (Conduction) Energy always transfers from hot to cold!

Below your notes, answer these 2 questions with your table. Be prepared to discuss! 1.Describe the differences in average motion of the particles at Point A and Point B 1 minute after I turn the stove on. 2.Describe the average motion of the particles at Point A and B 10 minutes after I turn the stove on. 3.I turn the stove off. Describe the average motion of the particles 10 minutes after I turn it off.

Quiz Study Guide Complete it independently first. Then we’ll compare answers! Then YOU NEED TO STUDY TONIGHT!
