Study Hall: Work quietly at your seat (homework, study, draw, read) NO TALKING. NO EXCEPTIONS. SIT IN ASSIGNED SEATS.

On a scrap piece of paper Warm Up How does a thermometer work? Explain in your own words…

Thermometer Experiment Rules for Today! GLASS CAN BREAK! BROKEN GLASS CAN CUT YOU! Please handle your glassware and thermometer with care!!!!!!

#14 Thermometer Experiment Add #14 to your Table of Contents Find the next available page and number the page #14 and label the page “Thermometer Experiment”

Step 1 Look closely at your thermometer. Write 1. The liquid inside your thermometer is probably a type of __________ that’s been dyed red. Talk with your table partner

Complete your sentence 1. The liquid inside your thermometer is probably a type of __alcohol__ that’s been dyed red.

Step 2 Practice reading the temperature in °C by having your eye at the same level as the top of the red liquid. 2. Record the temperature in °C ? This is considered room temperate

Step 3 Put your thumb or finger on the red bulb (at the bottom) and observe your thermometer carefully. 3. Does the red liquid move? Describe the movement (no movement, slow, rapid)

Step 4 Place the thermometer in hot water and watch the red liquid. Keep it in the hot water until the liquid stops moving. 4. Record the temperature in °C and describe how the red liquid moved (slow, rapid, no movement)

Step 5 Now put the thermometer in cold water. Keep it in the cold water until the liquid stops moving. Record the temperature in °C. 5. Record the temperature in °C and describe how the red liquid moved (slow, rapid, no movement)

Make a table on the right side of your notebook using your data Thermometer in: Temperature Reading Room Temperature Cold Water Circle one: Expand/Contract Hot Water Circle one:. Expand/Contract

Step 6 Based on what you know about the way molecules move in hot liquids 6. Explain why the liquid in the thermometer goes up when heated. Talk to your table partner When heated (gain energy), the molecules of the red liquid inside the thermometer move faster. This movement causes the molecules to spread or expand a little further apart. They have nowhere to go other than up the tube = you observe rising liquid

Step 7 Based on what you know about the way molecules move in cold liquids 7. Explain why the liquid in the thermometer goes down when cooled. Talk to your table partner When the thermometer is placed in cold water, the molecules slow down (lose energy). The molecules move closer or contract. The liquid moves down the tube.

Step 8 8.Why do you think the tube which contains the red liquid is so thin? The red liquid is contained in a very thin tube so that a small difference in the volume of the liquid will be noticeable.

Step 9 9.What do you think is the purpose of the larger outer tube? The large outer tube has two purposes—to protect the fragile inner tube and act as a magnifier to help you better see the red liquid.

Brian Pop Video Video link “States of Matter – What’s Your State”? Watch the video – you do not have to take notes!

Frayer Diagram Completion You will work with your table partner to complete the 3 remaining sections of each diagram Refer to the handout for each step States of Matter example: Facts/ Characteristics: matter can exist in 1 of 3 states Examples: solid ice, liquid water, steam (gas) water Non-Examples: Happy, Sad, Nervous

Discovery Ed videos Watch the videos – you do not have to take notes “Energy and Iron as a Solid, Liquid” “Solids to liquids and back again”

Discovery Ed Video Quiz Online Quiz “Exploring Phases of Matter” Use the words in the word bank to complete the quiz On an available page in your notebook, number your paper from 1 – 10 Write your answers as the video is played Review answers as a class

Exit Ticket Please let me know if you: Need more explanation about…. Need more clarification about….. Do not understand…… You must be specific….I don’t understand will not be accepted! Raise your hand if you would like to complete an exit ticket

Homework Identify items in your house that exist in the 3 states of matter Try to give at least one example of each state of matter

Prezi Demonstration Prezi Link
