2 LESSON 1:Heat and Temperature
Learning objective: to understand the difference between heat and temperature Starter: Label the diagram to show the temperature you would expect from each one.

3

4 What’s the temperature?
The coldest place on Earth is Antartica, where temperatures as cold as -89˚C have been recorded. At the other extreme, the hottest place on Earth is the El Alzizia desert in Libya where temperatures have soared to 58˚C. What’s the difference in temperature and heat?

5 Can you trust your senses?
Try holding one hand in hot water and the other in cold water. Then put them both into warm water. What did you notice?? Task 1 You’ll probably find something strange. The cold hand senses the water as warmer, while the hot hand, feels it colder.

6 Heat Temperature Heat is a type of energy.
When we use the word hot or cold it is a comparison with another object. Temperature Temperature is a way of measuring how hot or cold something is against an agreed scale. Ext: What is the unit of temperature?

7 The Celcius temperature scale
We measure temperature to tell us exactly how hot or cold something is. To do this we use a thermometer, which has a scale on it. The celcius temperature scale is based on two fixed points, the melting point of ice (water) and the boiling point of water at normal atmospheric pressure. The melting point of water is called 0, and the boiling point is called 100. There are 100 divisions or degrees between these two points.

8 Make your own thermometer
If you had a thermometer without a scale, you could make your own scale. Dip it in melting ice for a few minutes and mark off the reading: this is 0˚C. then put it in boiling water and mark off this reading: 100˚C. Then divide the distance between the two fixed points into 100 equal units.

9 The right thermometer for the job
There are different thermometers for different jobs. For example, your body temperature is 37˚C but the temperature in a freezer might be -20˚C. You need different thermometers to measure a range of temperatures, from the hottest to the coldest on its scale

10 The right thermometer for the job
Some thermometers have a liquid in a a bulb. The liquid expands when it becomes warm, and the level moves up the tiny capillary tube inside. You read where the top of the liquid has got to on the scale. But not all thermometers are like this – there are lots of different kinds. Digital thermometers show you the reading in numbers.

11 The coldest temperature possible is absolute zero and is -273 C.
Why are different types of thermometers used to measure more extreme temperatures? Design a thermometer capable of measuring very cold temperatures. What would be its main design features? Task 2:

12 How heat flows Why does tea get cold?? Fill in the blanks: Flow, difference, colder, hotter, into, from If there is a ___________ in temperature between an object and its surroundings or another object there is a ________ of heat. Heat always flows from ________ to __________ areas. If an object is placed in warmer surroundings heat flows ______the object from the surroundings. If an object is placed in cooler surroundings heat flows ______ the object into the surroundings.

13 When we say something is very hot we mean it has a lot of heat energy
When we say something is very hot we mean it has a lot of heat energy. When we say something is very cold we mean it has very little heat energy.
