3 Demo-Popcorn Turn on hot plate
In a large clean beaker, add cooking oil to cover bottom of beaker Place several kernels of popcorn into the beaker. Cover beaker with aluminum foil. Place beaker on hot plate.

4 Demo Questions What method of heat transfer is taking place?
What is the order of heat transfer? Describe what is happening inside the kernels of popcorn.

5 Demo: Will blue and yellow make green?
In what direction does heat flow? a. left to right b. cold to hot c. hot to cold d. top to bottom 2. Observe the beakers and predict what will happen when the small beaker with cold water and blue food coloring is placed inside the large beaker with hot water and yellow food coloring. 3. 7 Turn on a lamp with a 75 watt light bulb
Turn on a lamp with a 75 watt light bulb. After a few minutes, put your hand as close to the side of the bulb as you can without touching it. (or do this with a hot plate) Can you feel the heat from the bulb without touching the bulb? What method of heat transfer is this?

8 Observing Gas Expansion
Question to investigate: What happens to the gas molecules when it is heated? What happens to the gas molecules when it is cooled? Materials: Test tube, one-hole stopper, glass tubing 5 – 6 inches, pipette, colored water, beakers of warm and ice water Procedure Place the assembled test tube apparatus in a beaker of warm water. Observe the colored water plug. Place the test tube apparatus in a beaker of ice water. Observe the colored water plug. Hold the test tube with your hand. What did you observe with the colored water inside the glass tubing?

9 Observation Questions:
What effect did the heat energy from the warm water have on the volume of air? What happened to the pressure on each wall of the test tube as you heated up the air? How will you describe the motion of the gas molecules as you hold the test tube? Cite some evidences how it works. How will you describe the arrangement of the gas molecules as it is being heated? Describe the arrangement by using the level of “disorder” of the gas molecules. Are the molecules getting ordered? Or disordered? Conclusion: Answer the investigation question found at the top of this page

10 Moving Molecules in a Solid
Question to Investigate: What happens to the solid material when it is heated? Materials: Ball and ring apparatus. Bunsen burner for heating the ball Room temperature water (to cool the ball) Procedure Hold the ball in one hand and the ring in the other. Insert the metal ball on the ring apparatus. Observe. Place the metal ball in the flame of a Bunsen burner for about 1–2 minutes Try to push the ball through the metal ring again.

Answer these questions on a separate paper (Answers should be in sentences) What happened to the metal ball after you heated it for 1-2 minutes? What explanation can you give for this observation? How is the motion of the atoms in solid metal different from the motion of the molecules in liquid water? What is it about atoms and molecules in liquids and solids that keep them close to one another even though they are moving? Conclusion: Answer the investigation question found at the top of this page

15 Cooking potatoes in boiling water seems simple enough
Cooking potatoes in boiling water seems simple enough. Potatoes are placed in a pot of water. The pot is placed above a flame or hot coils. The pot gets heated. The water is in contact with the pot and the water gets heated. The hot water at the bottom of the pot begins to rise and cooler water takes its place at the bottom of the pan. The potatoes begin to cook. Rewrite the description of cooking potatoes to include the correct use of the new vocabulary words of radiation, conduction, and convection.
