 They are very good readers. They read fast and comprehend what they read. They are willing to read nonfiction, such as essays, letters, speeches, and newspaper articles, as well as fiction  They use a dictionary to look up words as they read. They enjoy building their personal vocabulary.  They are willing to read several books over the summer and be prepared for a test at the beginning of the school year.  They are strong, developing writers. They are willing to draft, revise, and edit their writing, and they are not satisfied until a piece of writing is the best they can do. They come in for individual writing conferences with their teacher.  They participate in class discussions, willing to articulate an idea or opinion, and they listen to others with an open mind. AP ENGLISH STUDENTS ARE GOOD AT…

AP STUDENTS (cont’d)  They are willing to do oral presentations, individually or in groups. They are willing to work on group projects outside of class.  They do all homework assignments – weekends, vacations included. They expect to have homework 3 or 4 times per week.  They are committed to taking the AP Exam, and to putting in extra hours on weekends to study for the exam.  They have excellent attendance, and tardies are practically nonexistent.  They can live with the possibility that although they may have gotten A’s and B’s in English in the past, they might earn a C in AP Language.  When they say, “I’m willing to work hard,” they mean #1-10 above!
