10 th Grade Business Ms. Morrison

GMO-Genetically Modified Organisms GMO’s have had specific changes made to their DNA Exposure to chemicals or radiation Selective breeding for plants and animals GMO’s can be plants such as corn, soy beans and cotton as well as animals.

In the early 1990’s GMO foods became available

Advantages of GMO’s Scientists claim GMO’s Have higher and faster crop yields Are resistant to disease and pests Lower pesticide and herbicide applications Have higher profitability for farmers Can have increased nutritional value

Disadvantages of GMO’s Health and safety The FDA does not test nor require tests for the safety of GM food Independent studies have shown GM food can cause heart, kidney and liver damage Gene transfer Creation on new allergies Unknown effects on humans Labeling No labeling requirements Ecological Cross pollination/results in new more resistant pests including weeds Works against nature Economical Costly and lengthy process Law suits-Intellectual property Many unknown Ethical Is it right?

GMO’s have been banned in: Japan Ireland Egypt Venezuela Hungry Zambia The U.S. Bans GMOs In Missouri In a National Wildlife Refuge
