Pet Foods

Dogs and Cats Thirty-nine percent of households own at least one dog Most owners (60 percent) own one dog Twenty-eight percent of owners own two dogs Twelve percent of owners own three or more dogs On average, dog owners spent $248 on veterinary visits (vaccine, well visits) annually Thirty-three percent of households own at least one cat Fifty-two percent of owners own more than one cat On average, owners have two cats (2.2)

Special Considerations Puppies Active Dogs Reproducing Females Senior Dogs

Puppies Smaller breeds need more energy per lb Larger breeds grow slower so a lower calorie feed might fit better.

Active Dogs Higher energy needs Demands on the body Stress Need for repair Highest level of performance

Reproducing Females Highest energy needs of any life stage Demands on the body Stress Need for repair Similar to active dogs…but more Maintain mother and pups

Senior Dogs Lower protein is WRONG Need quality protein to maintain body May need fewer calories If healthy = normal diet If sick = prescription diet

Pet Food Ingredients Listed in Order by Weight Meat Proteins Cereal Carbohydrates Fats – for taste and energy Vitamins Minerals Micro Nutrients

What Differentiates Pet Foods? Chicken, beef, lamb, on a label indicates whole meat. Contains a lot of water. If whole meat is first ingredient another animal protein should also appear in the first few ingredients in a high quality food. Corn and soy are both harder for dogs to digest, rice is best. Unidentified “animal” or “meat” meals and fats are generally the lowest quality.

Corn – Wonderful, cost effective food (54%) Wheat – From America’s bread basket (60%) – Hard Red Spring Wheat – best in the world Rice – Easy to digest (72%) – Quick glucose spike Cereal Carbohydrates

Questions What are some ways to attract new pet food customers to your location? What questions can you ask your current pet food customers to ensure they are buying the best food suited for their pet?

Tuffy’s and Nutrisource Tuffy’s is our supplier of NutriSource and Tuffy’s Gold, and they have decided to make a distribution change We are now bound by the distribution pricing dictated by Tuffy’s. Tuffy’s cost to Feed-Rite has increased, and as a result our costs to dealers will need to increase, along with the suggested retail prices. Because of the rigid pricing structure, Feed-Rite will not be able to provide pallet or other volume discounts on NutriSource and Tuffy’s Gold brands. And these brands will not be eligible for the Companion Animal Category Leader discounts.

Tuffy’s and Nutrisource In discussions with our supplier it has been implied that rural farm stores are not going to be part of their distribution plans in the future. We have been told that Tuffy’s Gold will be going to a national chain of hardware stores and from their pricing strategies that national chains are part of their growth plans.

Tradition Pet Food The Tradition pet food brand is owned as a private label by Feed-Rite. It is exclusive to Feed- Rite and Feed-Rite dealers, and is still our number one brand of pet food. The pricing structure, discounts, and Category Leader status will not change. We would appreciate if you; our dealers would work with us to as we go through these changes and try to work with our supplier to find a way to be part of their supply chain.
