The Ritual of Baptism: Symbolic Actions and Words Each sacrament has matter and form Matter = the material things we see, use. Form= the specific, special words we use. In Baptism, as in all sacraments, the Christian community, the Church is the primary symbol. In addition to this…………….

…there are four symbols in the rite of Baptism Water(matter)= at the core of the sacrament of Baptism is the water rite. It is essential and the words (form) “ I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Without this action and these words no baptism has taken place. Water: A natural symbol of_______________________________ Scriptural meanings_________________________ Take the plunge! Total immersion.

Oil: Oil is a symbol of: Healing Strength Protection For anointing kings and those set aside for sacred duties. The anointing with oil of the new Christian= being chosen to share in the risen life of Jesus and to receive the Holy Spirit through him.

The white(new) garment To symbolize the radical newness of a life in Christ, of being “clotherd in Christ” the baptized receives a white or new garment To wear after the water ritual. In appearance as well as in spirit, the person is a “new creation.”

A lighted Candle: Share the light of Christ Light dispels darkness Where there is light, there is life. “Light of the World” The flame of the candle is lit from the Easter candle.
