History of JCU 11 October University of Queensland Senate recommends a regional university be established. 19 May State Cabinet announces that a University College will be established at Townsville under the name of the University of Queensland 10 December 1969-University of Queensland changes name to James Cook University The University was named for James Cook, the first to discover Australia.
