Science and the Environment 1-1 Understanding our Environment Big Questions  What is environmental science?  How does it compare/contrast to ecology?

1-1 Objectives  Define environmental science and compare it with ecology  List the five major fields of study that contribute to environmental science  Distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources  Classify environmental problems into three major categories

Understanding our Environment  Environmental Science vs. Ecology  Environmental Science – the study of how humans interact with the environment  Ecology – the study of how living things interact with each other and with their nonliving world

Understanding our Environment  Major Fields of Study that Contribute to Environmental Science:  Biology  Earth Science  Physics  Chemistry  Social Sciences

Big Questions  Compare/Contrast Ecology to Environmental Science  List the five (5) fields of study that relate to Environmental Science

Big Questions  What do you feel is the goal of environmental science?  What do you hope to gain from taking this class?

Understanding our Environment  The Goal of Environmental Science:  To understand and solve environmental problems  To do this, environmental scientists focus on two (2) types of interactions between humans and the environment: 1.How we use natural resources 2.How our actions alter the environment

Understanding the Environment  In your notes define: natural resource, pollution, and biodiversity

Big Questions  Why is it important for environmental scientists to have a background in many different fields of study?  What are the two types of interactions that environmental scientists study?

Understanding our Environment  In your notes, explain how hunter-gathers affected the environment in which they lived. (pg. 9)  Describe the major environmental effects of the agricultural revolution and Industrial Revolution. (pg. 10-11)

Understanding our Environment  Main Environmental Issues 1.Resource Depletion  Renewable Resource – replaced relatively quickly  Fresh water, air, soil, trees  Nonrenewable resource – forms at much slower rate  Minerals and fossil fuels  Supply and demand 2.Pollution 3.Loss of Biodiversity

Understanding our Environment  Which category of environmental issues do the following problems fit into?  Clear-cutting forests  Extinction of possible cancer treating plant in the tropical rainforest  Draining a marsh for urban development  Burning of tires  Car exhaust  Oil spill along a coastline

Case Study  Read pgs. 12-13  Lake Washington: An Environmental Success Story  Questions:  Who was involved in the cleaning process of Lake Washington?  Would this classify as a local, regional, or global environmental threat? Support your answer.

Section 1 Review (pg. 15) Please answer all of the questions to the section review in your notebook. Be prepared to discuss/share your answers tomorrow.
