Section 1.3: Biodiversity CHAPTER 1: A VIEW OF LIFE By: Sunday Alok & Jenny Sattiewhite

Biodiversity, What is it? “Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all sources including, interlaid, terrestrial, and marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are a part of, this includes diversity within species and ecosystems. the term was brought up in 1985 by Walter G. Rosen. For the national forum on biodiversity a conference that took place in Washington D.C in 1986. The word is a short phrase for biological diversity. It consist of three main diversity: species diversity, genetic, and ecosystem diversity

The Three Diversity species diversity: diversity of species on earth ranging from animals and plants. genetic diversity: heredity quality that makes one single thing that’s from the same species unique in reason to one another ecosystem diversity: different ecosystem from mountain ecosystem, grassland ecosystems, desert ecosystem, fresh water ecosystems, forest ecosystems and marine ecosystem. The two largest ecosystems of them all are the tropical rainforest and coral reefs. The two fall under the marine and forest ecosystems

Tropical Rainforest ecosystem: where there is huge tall, thick evergreen woodland tress all over the place that structure the features of the vegetation in the forest. Is the most diverse of plants and animals, a whole lot more than the other ecosystems There are four layers to the forest one is the forest floor, second is the understory, third the canopy layer, and fourth the evergreen. Tropical rainforest can be found in countries such as Africa, Asia and other parts of the world, mostly developing countries provides us with many types of food such as chocolate, sugar and medicine. the oldest biome on the earth! According to the nature conservancy it covers less than 2 percent of the Earth's total surface area  one of the largest well-known tropical rainforest is the amazon rain forest  home to different tribal groups that’s been living there for over thousands of years Weather in the tropical rainforest: The atmosphere is mostly wet and dry the season are really short and doesn’t really last for a long time.

Tropical Rainforest Healthy rainforest VS Destroyed

Coral reef ecosystem:  the oceans rainforest Coral reef is like a underwater city full of bright beautiful colors of many plants and animals. Coral reefs are large underwater structures composed of the skeletons of coral, which are marine invertebrate animals. They are made up of small animals called the polyps. Coral reef look hard and solid but they are really fragile Like the tropical rainforest the coral reef is one of the diverse Marine ecosystems. The largest protected coral Reef is The Great Barrier Reef which is protected by a The great barrier marine park in Australia

Three Types of coral reef: fringing reefs. Great Barrier reef Coral atolls

What’s Harming the coral reef? climate change Overfishing Oil spills fishing equipment dynamite fishing which is where they take sticks of dynamite, grenades, or homemade explosives are throwing in to the water is mudroom which is where they cover coral reefs with nets and drop large stones or rocks onto the reef destroying it and causing fish and animals to flee.

Volcanoes are damaging to our Ecosystem lava flows, atmosphere effects, gases, tsunamis, forest fires and earth quakes cause huge damages to both tropical rain forest and Coral reefs. Aquatic life is effects when there is a increase in acidity and changes in temp. Forest life can be effected by bird migration, roosting, and feedings. Good news is the lava is very rich in proteins, once cooled of things can grow back rather fast.

Damages to our Ecosystem Philippines Red Coral Reef was severally damages by the effects of the 1991 volcano eruption Mount St. Helen was destroyed by the effects of the volcano in 1980 killing 1500 people and est. 24,115 animals.

Facts 50-90% Earths plants and species are found in these tropical regions We Benefit from food, and more than half of U.S. synthetic drugs come from these regions. We the people need to become proactive and help save and take care of our ecosystem.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our ecosystem and how important it is to our lives
