Nutritional Analysis

Your Homework:  You were supposed to record everything you consumed in a 24 hour period.  You were supposed to include not only WHAT you ate, but HOW much you ate.  If you have not yet done this, please take a moment to jot down what you have consumed in the past 24 hours.  When you are ready, Click Here

Let’s Review  CALORIES measure the amount of energy in your food.  Calories can be good or bad.  You need to eat calories in order to survive.  You want to make wise choices about how you get your calories. A 500 calorie sandwich is better than a 500 calorie milkshake. Next

Burning Calories  Calories supply energy to your body.  Every action your body performs requires calories. This includes breathing, thinking, blinking, swallowing, and keeping your heart pumping.  The amount of calories you need just to survive—staying in bed all day—is called your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Find Out Your BMR When you’re done, close out of Internet Explorer and then… Move on

Are you Ready for a Quiz?  Calories Measure the amount of ________ in your food. FatNutrients SugarEnergy

You’re Right! Next Question:  Your BMR is how many calories you need in order to: Lose Weight Do nothing

Absolutely!  But we usually don’t stay in bed all day, so we need to eat more calories than just our BMR.  Well what should we be eating? Let’s Find Out

You need your nutrients  There are three main types of nutrients that can be found in food.  Although some people think you should avoid carbs or fats, you actually need a balance of all types of nutrients.  Each one can be found in different types of foods and has a different job. Move on

FATS Can Be Found In: DairyMeatsNuts Are needed for: Long-Term Energy Storage Cushioning Organs Move on Some fats are good, some aren’t. Fats from nuts are better than fats from a greasy cheeseburger.

CARBS CARBOHYDRATES Can Be Found In: BreadPastaSugars Are needed for: Immediate Energy Supply Move on Complex carbs (from grains, whole wheat, etc.) are better than simple carbs (sugary food).

PROTEINS Can Be Found In: DairyMeatsEggs Are needed for: Building muscle Repairing Tissue Move on Beans also have a lot of protein!

It’s Quiz Time!  Click on the Correct Answer: Fats are needed for what purpose? Long-Term Energy Storage Immediate Energy

Correct!  Click on the Correct Answer: Root Beer has carbs. TRUEFALSE

You got it!  Click on the Correct Answer: Which is a good source of protein? StrawberryMilk

Sorry, Wrong Answer! Go Back and Review

GREAT!  It looks like you understand the basics of nutrients. Now it’s time to find out if you are getting the right amount of each.  After some brief instructions, you will click on a link that will take you to an online nutritional analysis tool. Next, please

Instructions for the Nutritional Analysis 1.Enter your personal info 2.Start typing in foods/beverages from your list. After you hit “add food” you will choose what specific food (i.e. Wheaties instead of just “cereal”) and how much you ate (i.e. 2 servings of 1 cup each). 3.Continue clicking “add food” until your list is done. For some foods, you might have to add individual ingredients (peanut butter + jam + bread) 4.Finally click “Analyze Foods” Next

Final Instructions  After getting your analysis, look at the first four rows (Calories, Protein, Fats, Carbs). On the far right, it will tell you what percentage of the recommended amount you consumed. You are hoping for close to 100% in every category.  When you are done, MINIMIZE Internet Explorer, and click the LAST STEP button on this screen. That will open a Word Document. You may then press ESC to close this screen, and finish the hour answering questions in Word. Take me to the Nutritional Analysis LAST STEP
