What is a calorie? A calorie is a unit of energy that measures how much energy food provides to the body The body needs calories to function properly Food labels list calories by the amount in each serving size

Metabolism Metabolism converts the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) BMR is a measure of the rate at which a person’s body “burns” energy, in the form of calories, while at rest

What factors influence BMR? Genetics Exercise Body composition

Calories Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a serving of this food General Guide to Calories: 40 Calories is low 100 Calories is moderate 400 Calories or more is high

How many calories do you burn in a day? The number of calories a person burns in a day is affected by: 1. BMR 2. Amount of fat and muscle in body 3. How much the person exercises

How many calories should you eat? There is a right number of calories for YOU This number depends on your age, gender, weight, activity level, and whether you are trying to gain, maintain, or lose weight

Calorie Balance Calorie balance over time is the key to weight management Calories consumed must equal calories expended for a person to maintain the same body weight Consuming more calories than expended will result in weight gain Consuming fewer calories than expended will result in weight loss

How many calories does physical activity use? Running (at 5 miles per hour) = 590 calories McDonald’s Big Mac = 540 calories

Food Labels Ingredient Labels – chemical composition of food Nutrition Facts – provides information on the nutrients in the food

Serving Size They are provided in familiar units, such as cups or pieces, followed by the metric amount, e.g., the number of grams The size of the serving on the food package influences the number of calories and all the nutrient amounts listed on the top part of the label.
