He went to Harvard University and Columbia Law Schools then got accepted into New York Bar. Married his cousin Eleanor Roosevelt. One daughter and five sons. Commander in chief during WWII. 32nd president, he was a democrat. Only president to be elected four times. Roosevelt led the United States through the Great Depression and World War II, and expanded the powers of the federal government through a series of programs and reforms known as the New Deal. April 12, 1945, Roosevelt suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage and died.

B ACKGROUND INFORMATION : T HE W ORLD World War II was going on and the United States wanted to stay neutral and not get involved. Allied Vs. Axis Nazi’s Pearl harbor was a good naval base.

M ESSAGE MADE : FDR Roosevelt's message was to inform that the Japanese had attacked us when in peace. He wants to declare war! His speech was very short and straight forward.

S OAPSTONE Subject: Declaring War against the Japanese. Occasion: Bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941. Audience: Congress, Americans, and Enemies. Purpose: He wants to join the war, and give Americans comfort and hope. Speaker: Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was a Commander-in-chief of the army. He was an American who was angered by the attack and wanting to fight back. Tone: Serious, Hurt, Encouraging, and confident.

E THOS “As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed all measures to be taken for our defense.” FDR uses his position in government. He gave his speech as the White House. Giving it great important and symbolism.

P ATHOS “The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American Naval and military forces.” FDR is speaking to Americans telling them that is an impact on our defensive line. “Very many American lives have been lost.” This appeals to many American families who have been hurt. “a date we will live in infamy” By using the word Infamy FDR brings more emphasizes of the embarrassment the Japanese held against America.

“With confidence in our armed forces– with the unbounded determination of our people– we will gain inevitable triumph– so help us God.” FDR tries to inspire and give hope to Americans by going into this war. He uses religion to bring security.

L OGOS “The facts of yesterday speak for themselves.” FDR is basically stating facts throughout his whole speech of what the Japanese have done. He uses this to emphasize everything to help give more reason to declare war. “Japanese government had deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.” He uses his reasoning to say that the Japanese tricked us to be calm and not involved in the war right before attacking us. Anaphora “Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night the Japanese attacked Midway island.”
