2 The Early Years... He was born in Hyde Park, New York on January 30, 1882.

3 The Early Years... He was the only child in a wealthy family. He was educated at home. Franklin, age 12, and Sara Roosevelt.

4 The Early Years... He married his fifth cousin, Anna Eleanor while in Law School on March 17, 1905. They worked together.

5 Adult Life… In 1910 Franklin became a New York Senator as a Democrat.

6 Adult Life… Franklin developed a serious disease called Polio in 1921. It affected his ability to walk. He needed leg braces and later a wheelchair to move around. Mr. Roosevelt needed help to accomplish many everday tasks.

7 Adult Life… He and Eleanor built a home in Warm Springs, Ga. This was near a natural pool of warm water that helped to strengthen his legs. Later they nicknamed their home the “Little White House”.

8 FDR and his POLITICAL Career After working as a Senator in New York, Franklin became the Governor in 1928. As a Governor, one of the problems he wanted to solve was to help people get back on their feet. He started programs to get people working again. People stood in long lines like this for food when they were out of work. This was before FDR began helping them.

9 FDR and his POLITICAL Career During the Great Depression, people noticed how well Franklin’s programs were helping those in New York. They voted him to become the 32 nd President. He gave a famous speech to encourage people at that time. His words “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself”. Franklin Delano Roosevelt being sworn in as the President of the United States.

10 FDR and his POLITICAL Career When he was making his acceptance speech he promised the American people a “New Deal”. He kept his promise to get Americans back to work. Government started programs giving people jobs and hope again. The nation was able to rebuild itself.

11 FDR and his POLITICAL Career In 1936, Mr. Roosevelt was elected again to another term as President. Back then there were no computers so he had to write all of his speeches and letters by hand. Often times he sat at his desk shown here.

12 In 1939 World War II began. Many Americans did NOT want the United States to get involved. 1940 and 1944 saw Mr. Roosevelt get elected for 2 more terms. This brought his total up to have him serve more terms than any other person before him or since. He served 4 terms. Now there is a 2 term limit.

13 On December 7 th, 1941 our decision to stay out of the war changed. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. President Franklin Roosevelt chose to enter the war at this time.

14 As President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt led a fight for freedom and liberty from dictators around the world.

15 Remembering Franklin Roosevelt FDR died on April 12, 1945 at Warm Springs. He is buried in the rose garden of his estate in Hyde Park, NY.

16 Remembering Franklin Roosevelt In Washington DC there is a large open area dedicated to Franklin’s loyal contribution to the American people.

17 Remembering Franklin Roosevelt In 2002 a memorial was made in honor of FDR.
