2 Background Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York. His parents were James and Sara Roosevelt. He was an only child. He married Eleanor Roosevelt on March 17, She was his fifth cousin. They had six children. ©America’s Story

3 Political Career Franklin D. Roosevelt was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by Woodrow Wilson in 1913. In 1921 Roosevelt got sick and was permanently paralyzed from the waist down. He used a wheelchair, but was never seen in it in public. In 1929 he became the governor of New York. He won the 1932 presidential election.

5 Supplemental Lend-Lease Bill
President Roosevelt wanted to help Great Britain during World War II. The United States wanted to stay neutral and stay out of the war. He proposed a bill that would allow him to help without going to war. The Lend-Lease Act gave Roosevelt the authority to give aid like ammunition, tanks, airplanes, trucks, and food.
