Scottish Baccalaureate in Languages Planning for the Interdisciplinary Project

Scottish Baccalaureate in Languages Aims of the Baccalaureate:  Raise the status and value of S6 and motivate learners  Provide qualifications which are valued for entry to higher education  Provide a bridge between school and higher education/employment  Encourage collaboration between schools and further/higher education institutions  Allow learners to relate and apply learning to realistic contexts  Enable learners to compete in the international job market  Develop the generic skills needed for learning, employment, life

Course Requirements 2 AH Courses (from two eligible modern languages and English/ESOL/Gaidhlig) AH Interdisciplinary Project Unit (graded A,B,C) The Scottish Baccalaureates will be awarded at: PASS or DISTINCTION Criteria for Distinction: Grade A in one eligible Advanced Higher Course Grade A in one other component of the Bac Grade B or above in all other mandatory components

Interdisciplinary Project Undertaken in 3 stages: Stage 1 (negotiation and planning) Stage 2 (carrying out) Stage 3 (review and evaluation of own learning) Assessed through clear, holistic Grade Related Criteria Advanced Higher level Unit (SCQF Level 7) SQA double-credit Unit (80 hours) Internally assessed, with external verification

Context The project, which must involve a languages based investigation or practical assignment, will explore and bring out the relevance of languages in one or more of the following broad contexts: employability enterprise citizenship sustainable development economic development

Skill Acquisition The candidate will develop and demonstrate the following generic and cognitive skills across the three stages of the project: Application: of subject knowledge and understanding Research skills: analysis and evaluation Interpersonal skills: negotiation and collaboration Planning: time, resource and information management Independent learning: autonomy and challenge in own learning Problem solving: critical thinking; logical and creative approaches Presentation skills Self evaluation: recognition of own skills development and future areas for development

Assessment Evidence of achievement should be organised in a folio or e-portfolio which contains five mandatory pieces of evidence. These are: Project proposal Project plan Presentation of project findings/product Evaluation of project Self-evaluation of generic/cognitive skills development
