2 New Advanced Higher Subject Implementation Events Health and Food Technology: Advanced Higher Course Assessment

3 Course Assessment at Advanced Higher  Course Assessment at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher assesses Added Value  Courses at Advanced Higher are graded A – D, as at present  Controlled Assessment of setting, conducting and marking  For Advanced Higher Health and Food Technology, there are two Components – a Question Paper and a Project  No dual running at Advanced Higher in session 2015-16

4 Advanced Higher HFT – Question Paper  Set and marked by SQA  Duration – 2 hours  The QP will have 40 marks  4 x 10 mark questions  all questions will be mandatory  command words used will be: Explain Evaluate Analyse

5 Advanced Higher HFT – Question Paper The Question paper will include the following knowledge and understanding:  the relationships between food and health  food science  contemporary food issues affecting consumer choice  commercial food manufacture

6 Advanced Higher HFT - Project  Set by centres within SQA guidelines, conducted under some supervision, and submitted to SQA for marking  Investigate a current food issue  The Project will have 60 marks Project proposal Research Analysis and evaluation  3,000 – 4,000 words

8 Advanced Higher HFT Project  Now 60 marks (was 100)  Candidates may choose any appropriate scientific, sociological or technological issue  Word count is 3,000 – 4,000 words, excluding references, footnotes and appendices. Work in excess of 10% over the upper word count limit will not be marked. There is no penalty for work submitted in less than the lower word count limit.  No marks will be awarded for materials presented in the Appendix

9 Advanced Higher HFT Project Stage 1: Project proposal (15 marks) 1a Literature review (9 marks) 1b Research question (1 mark) 1c Research plan (5 marks) Stage 2: Research (20 marks) 2a Relevance and clarity (12 marks) 2b Coverage (5 marks) 2c Presentation of results (3 marks) Stage 3: Analysis and evaluation (25 marks) 3a Analysis (15 marks) 3b Conclusions (5 marks) 3c Evaluation of the research process (5 marks) Using the groups of 2-3  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion

10 Advanced Higher HFT Project  Marks will be awarded for demonstration of skills, ie knowledge and understanding, research skills, analysis and evaluation, rather than for evidence of the collection of a wide range of information  Candidates should review the information gathered from the results of their research and identify appropriate information for inclusion in the Project report  Candidates are required to include appropriate referencing in the text and a list of references Using the groups of 2-3  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion

11 Workshop 2a Course Assessment – Project Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion Workshop Aim To understand the requirements of the Advanced Higher Health and Food Technology Project Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2-3: Consider  the ways the skills required in the Units prepare candidates to undertake the Project  the additional learning and teaching that would need to take place before starting the Project

12 Advanced Higher HFT Question Paper Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion  Now 40 marks (was 75)  No choice of questions, but there is a degree of candidate choice within some questions  No report, though a question may include a short prompt  Marks will be awarded for demonstration of skills based on knowledge and understanding ie explaining, evaluating, analysing, rather than for demonstrating a wide range of knowledge  There is flexibility in marking to allow candidates to access the maximum available mark

13 Workshop 2b Course Assessment – Question Paper Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion Workshop Aim To understand the requirements of the Advanced Higher Health and Food Technology Question Paper Using the materials provided, in groups of 2-3: Consider:  how the skills demonstrated in the Units prepare candidates for the requirements of the AH Question Paper  the further learning and teaching that would need to take place to prepare candidates to access the full mark allocation in the AH Question Paper
