Languages for Work Purposes- What is already on offer and being presented by centres? A suite of Units at Access 3, Intermediate 1 (since 2008) A suite of Units at Intermediate 2 and Higher (since 2009) Generic specification covering 10 languages All 40 hour free-standing Units Available across the range of 10 languages including Urdu

Modern Languages for Work Purposes: Advanced Higher Available from 2011-12 40 hour free-standing Unit Available across the range of 10 languages Suitable for various candidate groups ASP available for the level No NAB assessments

Who is the Unit aimed at? Free standing Unit, but also suitable for: candidates who have completed the Higher course candidates undertaking Languages Baccalaureate candidates undertaking Baccalaureate Interdisciplinary Project on its own candidates undertaking an AH Modern Languages Course in a different language candidates undertaking other vocational Units, e.g. in the areas of Hospitality or Travel and Tourism, as part of a cross-curricular package

Focus of the Unit Candidates will undertake an investigation in a broad vocational context which could relate to an area of career interest/study/future plans. This languages-based investigation will encourage candidates to develop their skills and abilities as independent learners.

Aims of the Unit work with non-directive supervision take responsibility for their own progress take ownership of their project enhance their skills and aptitude for employability develop their communicative skills in Urdu not only in assessable skills of Writing and Speaking but in also Reading and Listening

Unit Outcomes Outcome 1 Produce an extended piece of writing in the specific language based on an investigation carried out within a vocational context Outcome 2 Make a presentation on the investigation, with a follow-up discussion, in the specific language

Evidence Requirements Outcome 1 Piece of written evidence: - 400-500 words in Urdu Should relate to one or more of the broad contexts: -employability -enterprise -citizenship -sustainable -economic development Not written under controlled conditions

Evidence Requirements for Outcome 2 Presentation approximately four minutes long in Urdu Respond to questions in Urdu lasting one minute approximately: - focusing on candidates evaluation of the project and reflexions on development/progress of the report Recorded on assessment checklist

The Assessment Support Pack (ASP) The same ASP is available for all languages It contains Details on how to generate evidence Exemplification of assessment: - three Case Studies with commentaries The Case Studies also contain suggestions for integrated assessments It also exemplifies Internal Verification and Quality Assurance processes
