Driving Innovation Robert Lowson National Contact Point FP7 Space Cork 17 September 2012 The United Kingdom; a major force in space 1

Driving Innovation T he Technology Strategy Board is a business-led executive non- departmental public body, established by the Government. Its mission is to promote and support research into, and development and exploitation of, technology and innovation for the benefit of UK business, in order to increase economic growth and improve the quality of life. National Contact Points are a Technology Strategy Board resource to assist UK Business in engaging with EU R&D funding opportunities. COSMOS+ is the EU National Contact Points network 2

Driving Innovation A world-leading industry people, growing by almost 15% annually Industry turnover over €8.5 billion and growing Driven by downstream growth World leading capabilities in key markets, eg –technology lead in satellite radar, space software, small satellites and military communications –leading exporter of satellite-based tools to the developing world. –broadband, monitoring deforestation and geo-data.

Driving Innovation A strong academic sector Leading centres (Surrey, Leicester, Strathclyde, Nottingham...) Success in EU collaborations - €7.5m of UK’s €10.5m receipts from 5 th Space Call Successful commercial spin-out (eg SSTL)

Driving Innovation Strategic drive new structures (National Centre for Earth Observation; International Space Innovation Centre at Harwell; new ESA hub, satellite applications catapult....) new mechanisms, eg in 2011 €5.4million for electronic infrastructure to support the collection, storage and management of satellite data, an €11million “Space for Growth scheme.....) a coherent space innovation and growth strategy, to increase UK global market share to at least 10 per cent from its current level 6 per cent, supported by space technology strategy focussing on key areas

Driving Innovation Looking forward

Driving Innovation EU space post-2014 Big debates, foreshadowing big changes in the landscape EU Space policy – moving slowly EU future financing (MFF) –Clouded by Commission proposals on GMES funding (wide support to include it inside MFF) Horizon

Driving Innovation Space in Horizon proposals Space R&I one of 7 themes under “industrial leadership and competitiveness” pillar (supported by Council) €1.7bn funding proposed for space research – compares with €1.4bn in FP7 including GMES; some Galileo research to be covered in space programme potential space relevance of other instruments Lots of work to be done to define programme –Expert consultation on H2020 content under way now –2014 work programme may be developed next year, (?published end-2013) 8

Driving Innovation GMES post 2014 Uncertainties over institutions and funding, but… It’s likely to be big (Commission want €4-5bn) Big operational task (ESA delivering, ?GSA managing) Driven by users, public service Sentinels will deliver vast quantities of new data -free 9

Driving Innovation Contact routes TSB _connect platform The main UK tool for sharing opportunities in FP7 Space – hope to develop its partner search capacity Mobile
