Class 2 – Parent Information Sheet - Autumn Term 2014 Hook – We will begin our theme this term by reading and watching lots of Roald Dahl books and films. We will start by reading ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ and then children will make their own enormous crocodile using their craft skills. On Friday 12th September we will have a fun Dahlicious birthday party day to celebrate this year being the 50 year anniversary of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Roald Dahl’s birthday, which is on Saturday 13th September. Celebration – End of theme dress up day and celebration assembly. (date to be confirmed) Class 2 – Parent Information Sheet - Autumn Term 2014 Literacy Our Literacy this term will be based on stories by Roald Dahl. Our indoor role play area is to be turned into the BFG’s cave – a quiet place where children will be able to sit, relax and really enjoy books. Outside our role play area will become Roald Dahl’s writing shed. Here children will be able to take on the role of a real author and write their own stories in the shed at the bottom of the garden – just like Roald Dahl! Children will be emersed in Roald Dahl stories and books this term to develop their love of reading and will have lots of opportunities to listen to, read and watch film versions of Roald Dahl books. They will also be improving their writing skills through a variety of writing activities inspired by Roald Dahl’s stories and poems. This term we will also be introducing the Y2’s to our joined handwriting script and we will continue to give the Y3’s opportunity to practice and develop their joined handwriting style. Children will continue to have regular guided reading sessions, phonics and spellings will be taught daily. Maths -We will begin this term by looking at numbers and the number system. Children will be learning to read, write, count and order numbers to 100 (y2’s) and 1000 (Y3’s). Y2’s will practise counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s whilst Y3’s will learning to count in 50’s and 100’s. They will learn how to order numbers and to recognise place value and use this knowledge to help them add and subtract 1’s, 10’s and 100’s respectively. Later on in the term children will be practising their skills of mental addition and instant recall of addition facts to 20 and using these to support their mental calculations of larger numbers. In shape children will learn to recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes and begin to describe their properties. RE- Our theme for this year is to be ‘Worship’. This term we will be concentrating on Christianity and be looking at the things that are important for Christians in their every day lives. We will be considering how rules play an important part in all our lives and what rules are important to Christians. Art – We will be looking at the role of the illustrator in children’s books, in particular Quentin Blake and his use of watercolours. Children will have opportunities to try out the techniques used by Quentin Blake and to create their own illustrations in his style. Science – Our science work this term will link in a cross curricular way to our theme of Roald Dahl. During the first half of this term we will be learning about health, how we grow and stay healthy focusing a lot of our learning on nutrition. After half term we will be developing our scientific skills further by exploring material properties, the use of materials. French & Music - This year French and Music are to be taught on Wednesdays by teachers new to Catforth: Mrs McElroy and Mr Calvert. We welcome them both to Class 2 and we are sure that the children in Class 2 will enjoy these lessons and learn lots of new skills. PE – Gymnastics and Dance will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has a fully named kit in school on these days. DT – Inspired by our Roald Dahl theme, we have two DT projects planned for this term. We will be learning the skills of paper folding and cutting, learning how to transform a piece of paper into pop ups and movable objects. Throughout the term we will be trying out and exploring a variety of pop ups ending in children working in groups to design and make their own pop up Roald Dahl books. Inspired by the BFG’s unhealthy diet of snozzcumbers we will be looking at different fruits and vegetables and will explore smoothies and fruit juices. Finally we will be designing and making our own delicious smoothies for the BFG to taste. Computing – Children will learn to use simple codes to create their own games. They will use computers in their Literacy and Maths to present information in a variety of ways including charts and graphs. Mrs Drinkall & Mrs Kemp
