WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY? To encourage a sense of spirit and adventure and to work well within a group setting.

WHO WILL BE SUPERVISING? United Nations International School and New York City Outward Bound Schools

Founded in 1987 as the first Urban Outward Bound Center Premier provider of experience-based outdoor leadership programs for youth and adults. Primarily serves NYC public school students through our 11 Expeditionary Learning Schools in all 5 boroughs.

WHAT DO CANDIDATES HAVE TO DO? Students will walk in groups of approximately twelve. They are responsible for navigating their way from the drop-off point to their camp on day one and from their camp to the pick-up point on day two. They will be carrying all their own equipment. This includes food, clothing, pots/pans, water, shelter materials and more. Walk for approximately 12km and be active for 6 hours each day.

WHAT DO CANDIDATES HAVE TO DO? They have to set up, dismantle and pack up their shelters. They have to design a menu, including organizing who buys what food and utensils and then cook it! They need to wake themselves up and be punctual in their timing when walking in order to reach destinations on time. They have to support each other as team members through all their endeavors.

OUTWARD BOUND INSTRUCTORS Trained in: Risk Management Technical Skills Facilitation Experiential Education Comprehensive Wilderness Medical Training Minimum of Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certifications (36hrs) Operate under well developed and extensive policies and procedures Have an established Emergency Response Plan DOE Background checked and fingerprinted

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TRIP? Transportation to and from UNIS to our destination on each day. Outward Bound Instructional Expertise and Safety & UNIS supervision. Permits. Basic Equipment including first aid equipment, sleeping pads, stoves, tarps, maps and compasses.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRIP? Food Personal equipment including clothing and dining utensils.

STUDENT PACKING LIST

EQUIPMENT Please adhere to the packing list provided. Your son/daughter should look at the weather in the days prior to the trip to help them in their planning. Particular things to note are: Hiking boots Adequate water containers Good layers Good waterproof clothing

SAMPLE FOOD PACKING IDEAS Breakfast: Oatmeal or Granola with powdered milk Lunch: Tortillas with cheese and tuna or Soy butter and Jelly Dinner: Wheat pasta with mixed veggies and canned chicken or dehydrated beans with rice and veggies Snacks: Granola Bars, Dried Fruit, Fig Bars

MEDICATIONS All medications must have a written doctors order including over the counter item such as (Tylenol)

THIS IS A QUALIFYING JOURNEY…. PARTICIPATION ALONE DOES NOT GUARANTEE PASSING THE ‘JOURNEY’ SECTION OF THE AWARD. THEREFORE, STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED ON: First aid procedures Necessary equipment & how to use it Route Planning & navigation Camp craft, including food & cooking Diet & nutrition Teamwork & leadership Technical skills in the mode of travel Observation skills End presentation

COSTS Total projected cost per student of $570. Total cost depends on number of students who attend and is based on all students attending at present. If costs go above this point, you will be notified and the remaining cost will be billed to your UNIS account in late March.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO/KNOW! Return ALL the paperwork and check (made payable to UNIS) by 6 th March. Help ensure your child has all the necessary equipment on the list. Ensure they have sufficient and good quality clothing that will keep them warm and dry and please note that long trousers are preferable. Fill out all forms. Make sure there are signatures at the bottom where required. Please ensure your child has a prescription or doctors note for all medications, including over-the–counter drugs DO NOT GIVE THEM TOO MUCH FOOD! Know what time they need to be dropped off and picked up at on Apr 11 th, 25 th and 26 th.
