Advising Student Athletes

 UWG’s student-athlete population is around 300.  Men’s Sports:  Baseball  Basketball  Cross Country  Football  Golf  Women’s Sports:  Basketball  Cross Country  Golf  Soccer  Softball  Tennis  Track and Field  Volleyball  Co-ed and Women’s Cheer teams Athletes

 The NCAA’s favorite phrase…  “It depends.”  Like the English language, there are lots of rules and lots of exceptions.  Sometimes the rules change.  Don’t be nervous! We are here to help! Eligibility 101

 Must be registered in full time hours (12) to practice and compete.  Most sports have some off-season practice and/or competition  Some sports compete in both Fall and Spring semesters Eligibility 101

 To maintain NCAA eligibility, student athletes must meet the following eligibility calculations:  Successfully complete a combined total of 24 semester credit hours for the year  (Soon this is going up to 27 hours)  75% of the 24 hours must be completed in Fall and Spring  No “Summer superstars”  Completing grades include A, B, C, D and S  Ds in ENGL 1101 and 1102 do NOT count as completing grades. Eligibility 101

 Student athletes must declare a major by their 5 th semester of enrollment.  Students can make changes but we ask them to let us know for tracking and certification purposes. Eligibility 101b

 After the 4 th semester, the 24 semester hours each year must apply to the student’s degree progress.  If the student’s major does not require or allow enough hours for a minor, courses toward a minor cannot be counted toward the 24 hour requirement.  Grade replacements of passing (completed) grades should be in addition to a 12 hour course load (can’t count again towards the 24 hour rule)  If possible, should take grade replacement courses in the summer Eligibility 102

 Student athletes should meet with an advisor just like any other student  Student athletes submit the following to their coaches:  Proof of advising with recommended courses (or core/major sections)  Wolf Watch Planner  Wolf Watch Notes  Grades First Notes  from advisor  Registration “form” with advisor signature  CRNs for the recommended courses (the student selects)  Print out of Schedule planner  Handwritten on their advising confirmation  Student athletes must take care of any holds on their accounts  Coaches give students’ forms to Dave and Emily  Dave and Emily complete the registration process on the first day of registration Registration process

 All student athletes should have an “AT” hold on their accounts  This prevents students from changing their schedule without first talking with the athletics department (coach, academic support and compliance officer)  We want them to understand the potential consequences to changes Athlete Hold

 Student athletes (and their friends and relatives) cannot receive extra benefits due to their status as a student athlete  Ask yourself: would I do this for any other student (or friend or family member of a student)?  Or: How would I handle this situation if the student was not an athlete? Extra Benefits?

 Anytime you have questions or concerns about a student athlete, please contact us:  Emily Hall Athletics Academic Coordinator UCC  Dave Haase UCC 312 Assistant Athletic Director Questions?
