Presentation transcript:

Indirect Objects and Indirect Object Pronouns Indirect objects are nouns, or pronouns, that usually precede the direct object and tell to whom, for whom, to what, and for what the action of the verb is done. –To find the I.O. (or I.O.P) ask the questions to whom, for whom, to what, or for what after the verb.

Ejemplos: I send Julie a letter –I send (to whom?) Julie a letter Gregorio is going to sing his girlfriend a song. –Gregorio is going to sing (to whom?) his girlfriend a song They are buying me a baseball bat. –They are buying (for whom?) me a baseball bat. We leave them a message. –We leave (for whom?) them a message.

Un aviso (a tip) If asking the questions (to whom, for whom, to what, or for what) does not seem to give you the correct answer, try re-writing the sentence. But, be careful that you do not change the meaning of the sentence. Once you have done this, the Indirect Object Pronoun is at the end of the sentence. It is also preceded by to or for.

Un aviso (a tip) I send Julie a letter. –I send a letter to Julie. Gregorio is going to sing his girlfriend a song. –Gregorio is going to sing a song for his girlfriend. They are buying me a baseball bat. –They are buying a baseball bat for me. We leave them a message. –We leave a message for them.

Los pronombres de complemento indirecto (Indirect object pronouns) The Spanish indirect object pronouns are: –Me –Te –Le –Nos –Les

Los pronombres de complemento indirecto (Indirect object pronouns) The placement of these pronouns is the same as the placement of Direct Object Pronouns. –There are two places that they may go in a sentence. They may go before the conjugated verb –OR They may be attached to the end of an infinitive or participle.

Clarifying phrases used with IOPs Because the pronouns le and les can refer to many different things you should use a clarifying phrase with them. The clarifying phrase consists of a + name or subject pronoun. The phrase is left in the same place it would be in the normal sentence.

Ejemplos: Yo mando a Julie una carta. –Yo le mando, a Julie, una carta. Gregorio va a cantar a su novia una canción. –Gregorio le va a cantar, a su novia, una canción. –Gregorio va a cantarle, a su novia, una canción. Ellos van a comprar a mí un bate. –Ellos me van a comprar, a mí, un bate. –Ellos van a comprarme, a mí, un bate. Dejamos a ellos un mensaje. –Les dejamos, a ellos, un mensaje.
