shiree Beginners Guide to the Visualisation

Accessing the Visualisation: What features can we see?

1) Log-in using your unique username and password. This is case sensitive, so remember to make sure CAPS lock is off. 2) Click Login

At the top of the screen are buttons the Trend Map (the default view) and a Log-out button.

The chart is displayed as a ‘stacked chart’. The x-axis represents time in months, and the y-axis the % or Number of BHH The indicator and sub-indicator are displayed above the graph. Using the mouse or touchpad, the user can ‘hover’ over this and see the question asked in CMS2 both in English and Bangla (note: Bangla script must be enabled to view questions written in Bangla, otherwise this will not show) The legend is displayed to the right of the chart.

Along the top of the Trend Map view are 10 tabs that the user may click on. The current open tab is made clear by a dark blue shading. The user may click between the ‘chart’ view or the ‘Geo’ view within the Trend Map view by clicking on the respective buttons Two small drop-down menus allow the user to view the chart differently (see following slides) The filter menu is located to the right of the Trend Map view (both chart and geo)

Beneath the chart view in the Trend Map is the Management view. To access this the user simply scrolls down using the scroll bar on the right. The Management view shows a list of Beneficiary Household ID numbers which have given the selected answer. To populate this list you can select the response you are interested in from the legend, next to the trend map. The public access version does NOT allow the user to view individual Household profiles.

Clicking on the Geo button allows the user to see trends displayed in geographic form over a map of Bangladesh. To revert back to the chart view, simply click on the chart button. The filter option remains on the right hand side of the chart view.

The user can ‘zoom’ into areas of Bangladesh that interest them using the ‘zoom-in and zoom-out’ button. Please note that due to technical limitations the Geo map allows upto 3000 BHH data ‘dots’ at one time. If you filter down to regional level using the filter menu, it is possible to see 3000 BHH data dots in a concentrated area. The data ‘dots’ displayed represent individual households. As the user zooms in, it is possible to see more accurately the spread of households. The legend is located below the filter menu. The coloured dots refer to the response according to the question and indicator

How can I use the Trend Map features?

On the Trend Map view, there are 10 ‘tabs’ which the user can explore. Each tab contains graphical information based on key indicators (Socio-economic, Watsan, etc). Clicking on new tabs, brings up the chart view for those indicators. Each tab contains further information based on the CMS2 questionnaire. Click on the drop-down menu to select a ‘parameter’. E.g. Under Socio-economic tab, you can see information for income, expenditure, cash savings and loans.

The chart shows data for each indicator (e.g. Income change) and the % breakdown by response by BHHs across each month displayed. So for example, in this view, the user can see the % breakdown for the responses “been increasing fast, been increasing a little, remained the same, been falling a little, been falling fast” for each month. Using your computer mouse or touchpad, you can use the cursor to ‘hover’ over each ‘node’ (round dots) that tells you the exact % breakdown for a particular response. E.g. in June, 62% of BHHs reported income had ‘been increasing a little’. Pressing Control+Shift and clicking on a node displays gender breakdown (see next slide)

Gender breakdown is by the household head (male or female headed household). To return to the chart view click the ‘Back’ button

This filter option is to the right of the trend map. Filter using the drop-down menus. It is possible to filter and see the % breakdown for a particular sub-set of beneficiary households. For example, if you want to filter by an ethnic group, then from the drop-down menu next to Ethnicity, simply select the option desired (e.g. Chakma). Once you have selected what filtered group you want to see, you must click on the View button. The graph will automatically change.

If you want to view data over a longer or shorter period, click here to change between 3 month, 6 month and 1 year view of data. The screenshot above shows a 6 month view. Click on this drop-down menu to see the chart view display either % of BHHs, OR, the number (#) of BHHs. The y-axis will change accordingly.

Additionally, the user can select or deselect responses in the legend. This gives the user a clearer picture of the trend for one response in a particular indicator – e.g. households saying income been falling a little

Remember to log-out when you stop using the visualisation. This will return the user to the login page. Please be advised that if the visualisation is left idle for minutes, it will automatically stop functioning, and the user must manually log-out and log back in to use it again. This is for security purposes.
