Background Past two years number of dedicated faculty, staff, advisory board members, and UW administrators have worked diligently to translate Governor Mead’s vision of a 21st century, world-class College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) into an action plan. Result of this sustained effort was the completion of “The University of Wyoming Tier-1 Initiative Stage One: College of Engineering and Applied Science Implementation Plan for FY2015-FY2020” in May Additional information about the Tier-1 initiative is available at: 2

Background One of the plan’s key ingredients is continued excellence in undergraduate education. College of Engineering and Applied Science has always been known for outstanding, ABET accredited programs in a wide variety of engineering disciplines and computer science at an affordable cost. The STEM Initiative within the Tier-1 plan will allow potential students to explore engineering and applied science at an early stage, providing unique opportunities to attend UW programs Separately, a student advisory center is available to provide assistance and advice to potential and enrolled students. Dedicated professionals working to maximize potential and talent of scholars. 3

K-14 Initiatives Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program Middle School Engineering Exploration Programs Teacher assistance programs for instruction on basic engineering skills and concepts On-site teacher support with mentoring and materials Graduate coursework for SMTC students Programs for our undergraduate and graduate students to visit Wyoming K-12 schools Provide hands on activities related to engineering and applied science Programs to improve math and science skills for CEAS freshmen and sophomores 4

Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program Scholarship enhancements for Trustee Scholars Available to Wyoming residents Provide $2000 toward purchase of computer and related equipment Provide $2000 for International Programs and professional conference attendance Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program $6,000 per year for four years Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to remain eligible Scholarship available to all incoming freshmen pursuing a major in engineering or computer science 5

Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program Selected students will participate in an Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program Develop students engineering and research skills during their freshman and sophomore years of study Seminars, development workshops, etc. Participate as an undergraduate student researcher during the summer of junior or senior year Develop skills to help prepare students for transition to graduate school and industry 6

Middle School Engineering Exploration Programs Provide opportunities for Middle School students to be exposed to careers in engineering and the practice of engineering Develop a stronger working relationship between CEAS and Wyoming Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program Determine benefits (college credit, scholarships, etc) CEAS can provide to graduates of PLTW programs in Wyoming Expand the number of Wyoming school districts participating in PLTW as part of their STEM core Provide “Exploration of Engineering” activities to classrooms 7

Teacher assistance programs Teacher assistance programs provide instruction on basic engineering skills and concepts including onsite teacher support with mentoring and materials UW workshop for STEM educators Concepts and practice of engineering “ESP for Teachers” Provide follow up regional workshops as part of the Graduate coursework for SMTC students CEAS coordinate efforts with the “Lost in Transition” program Develop graduate coursework for Science and Math Teaching Center students in engineering related concepts and practices 8

UW Student Visits to Wyoming K-12 schools Expose students (elementary, middle school, high school students) to concepts and practices of engineers and computer scientists Current CEAS undergraduate and graduate students will develop hands on kits for use in the classroom Service project for student professional societies Students will deliver lesson plan using kits in their own home town schools CEAS will cover the travel expenses and cost of kit development 9

Programs to improve math and science skills for CEAS freshmen and sophomores CEAS currently provides free tutoring Mon.-Fri., 8-5 pm and Mon.-Thu., 7-9 pm. By fellow students By members Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society Expand tutoring opportunities: Summer session Sunday nights CEAS work with Math Department faculty and the Outreach School to develop math enhancement programs for incoming freshman 10

Programs to improve math and science skills for CEAS freshmen and sophomores CEAS will enrich current retention programs for effectiveness Improving and enhancing content Current CEAS retention programs include: Power Groups Probation Packets for students seeking reinstatement (contains list of services) Engineering Floors in the Residence Halls Scholarship assistance for continuing superior performance Tau Beta Pi tutoring ES 1000 (Introduction to Engineering) Design Exercise Expose students to design process and excitement of engineering career ES 1060 (Engineering Problem Solving) Ensures students have at least one engineering course during their freshman semesters EE 1010 (Introduction to Electrical Engineering) Provides students a glimpse of what is waiting for them 11

Conclusions CEAS is very excited about the Tier 1 initiative The STEM Initiatives within the Tier-1 plan will allow students to explore engineering and applied science at an earlier age, providing:_ New opportunities for prospective students to attend UW programs.
