2 What is Upward Bound? The Paine College TRIO Upward Bound Program is a college prep program designed to enhance academic skills, leadership, and preparation for high school students who have the potential or desire in attending college. It provides academic support and career/college exploration It helps students with the college preparation, identification, and application process

3 What is Upward Bound? Upward Bound also offers a 6-week Summer Residential Program at Paine College, and Tutoring and Saturday Sessions during the Academic Year. Participants who successfully meet ALL Program requirements also participate in the UB Bridge Program, which is designed to assist with the transition from High School to College. Students accepted into UB remain in the program until their High School graduation.

4 Mission Statement TRIO Upward Bound provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.

5 How Did TRiO Programs Begin?
TRiO began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of in response to the administration’s War on Poverty. In 1965, Talent Search, the second outreach program, was created as part of the Higher Education Act. In 1968, Student Support Services, which was originally known as Special Service for Disadvantaged Students, was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments and became the third in a series of Educational opportunity programs. By the late 60’s, the term TRiO was coined to describe these federal programs.

6 Upward Bound at Paine? The Upward Bound Program at Paine College has been in operation since Currently, the program is funded to serve a limited number of students from: Cross Creek ARC Butler Glenn Hills Hephzibah Laney Josey Westside

7 Program Services Upward Bound projects provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language. Other services include: Tutoring Services Academic, Financial, or Personal Counseling Cultural Events Assistance in preparing for SAT and ACT college entrance exams Scholarship Information Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications

8 The Upward Bound Team Upward Bound has a competent staff of administrators, professional counselors, teachers, and tutors who work very closely with each student to provide the skills necessary for post-secondary education.

9 Two Phases of the Program
Academic Phase Tutoring (Mandatory) School Visitation Workshops/Seminars Senior Financial Aid Workshops Summer Residential Phase Six Week Academic Program Students reside at Paine College Social, cultural, and educational activities (college visits, banquets, workshops, etc.)

10 Who’s Eligible? MOTIVATED 9th and 10th grade students attending one of the following target High Schools : ARC, Butler, Cross Creek, Glenn Hills, Hephzibah, Lucy C. Laney, T.W. Josey, or Westside Students willing to attend Tutoring and Saturday Sessions twice per month Students who are willing to participate in Program Activities Students who would like to get a glimpse of the College Experience

13 Interested in TRIO UPWARD BOUND?
Make sure you sign up on the interest sheet (ONLY if you have not signed up already- please do not sign up again if you did last week!) Attend one of the General Information Sessions on Tuesday 9/12 or Wednesday 9/13 at Candler Memorial 5:45pm. Your parent must be present!!! Assistance with selecting and applying to college You will receive an application at the general information session to apply to the program.
