Summary What is an empowered patient? How do patients become empowered? What systems can patients use? 3 success factors for Patient Empowerment What services / systems are required to make this a success ? What can such patients do?

What does “empowered” mean? To invest with power, especially legal power or official authority To equip or supply with an ability

What is an “empowered patient” ? Our goal is to raise public awareness about pressing patient safety issues including adverse events, medication errors, hospital- acquired infections and communication failures.

What is an “empowered patient” ?  Patient safety ?  Strategy / implementation ?  Passive / active patient ?  Dependent / Independent / Inter-dependent ?  Born with innate ability / nurtured ?  Empowered patient who asks the doctor to do something vs disempowered patient who is given choice!  Is there a role for an “empowered patient” in the “complex chaos” of the NHS ?

The “Empowered Patient” Reactive vs Proactive Passive Enabled Informed Empowered Patient Person Family

Delivering the vision Starts with a person…....who may or may not become a patient…...who has certain needs…...who comes to us for help…...who wants to know that we will deliver… …the care they deserve… …with dignity… …with professionalism… …and above all respect for them as a person… …living amongst a community… …wanting the best that we can offer….
